I have never seen this technique used until I saw it on Rusty Whitt's Instagram. According to Google, it isn't utilized anywhere near as much as traditional (across the shoulders) or front squats, but is gaining traction because the movement forces intense core and upper back engagement, encourages an upright posture, and reduces spinal compression.

@InsideTheGators Much safer not having all that mass up around the neck. But need to pad that bar, wrap it with a towel if nothing else. What used to be spread out across the upper back / shoulders is now pressing down on two narrow strips of forearm.

@InsideTheGators it ultimately doesn't matter too much. Different coaches have different training philosophies. Zercher squats are good for football specifically because of the high demand for core bracing and upper back strength. It ultimately doesn't matter too much, just a squat variation

Seeing some former players talk about him, he did some non traditional things as well. Have you done these or utilized them with your team? I'm not a gym rat, or muscle head, but I have accidentally wondered into a gym a time or two (I mistook it for a Crumbl) in my life, and I have seriously never seen these performed before seeing Coach Whitt's videos. Though they aren't widely used, it appears there are quite a few proponents of them. As Coach Sumrall said from the jump, the players are going to experience some things they haven't experienced before. Got them out of their comfort zone.
