@Rainmaker1973 OMG - some of the posts here are breathtaking in terms of their ignorance of very basic science. These people are allowed to vote, drive cars, operate electronic devices, breed even. Should I laugh or cry?

In 1960, David Latimer planted a spiderwort sprout inside of a large glass jar, added a quarter pint of water, and then sealed it shut. He opened the bottle for the first time only 12 years later, in 1972, to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self-contained ecosystem flourished for more than 60 years as a perfectly balanced garden and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost ate the dead plants and broke down the oxygen released, turning it into carbon dioxide, essentially forming a microcosm of Earth.

@SJAMcBride HOCS & Perm Secs are unfit for strategic org role The NICS Board does not/cannot hold leadership to account; it needs to be mainly independent non-executives PAC needs to make robust recommendations about Perm Sec Group & role of HOCS Report does not benchmark staff Nos v GB🤔

The NI civil service is going backwards, costing vastly more and employing more staff while outcomes get worse, a devastating audit report reveals. After RHI, Jayne Brady was appointed to reform & costs £290,000 a year - but a key failure is leadership. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/…

@SJAMcBride Sam, why don't you do some journalism and benchmark her pay against that of a CEO of a PLC with similar number of employees or turnover? You'd get no change out of £3 mil.

A senior trade unionist who represents Stormont’s top civil servant has urged ministers to defend her pay and pension contributions soaring by £30,000 in a year – but no one has come forward to do so. Neither the DUP nor SF will say if they approved it. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/…

@NewtonEmerson I assume your comments reflect your investigation of the issue. So, you favour putative penalties for the 3 people caught last year engaged in minor, unintentional breaches of environmental standards? What's your view on the appropriate penalty for littering - public execution?

@SJAMcBride There are 226,000 public sector workers in NI. Let's call the cost of employment for that (pay, pension NI contributions, etc) a conservative £11 billion per annum. So, over 'several' years, employment disputes have added roughly 0.025 per cent of the costs of employment. Yawn.

Stormont has admitted to payments of more than £11m to settle public sector employment dispute claims over recent years — but the true figure is far higher, and it doesn't know it. Strikingly, the two Alliance departments are here the least transparent. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/column…

According to DAERA’s 2021-22 accounts, Mr Huey’s salary was between £105k -£110k and his pension pot was £972k at 31/3/22. It is very likely to be over £1 million whenever DAERA’s 2022-23 accounts are published. Jobs for life no matter what! @SJAMcBride daera-ni.gov.uk/sites/default/…

@SJAMcBride Get real, Sam. True journalism died years ago. All that's left is clickbait and poorly informed opinions masquerading as facts. It's just another entertainment platform - and one that's failing, Bel Tel included. Your tweets are a giggle, definitely not flagging serious analysis

Journalists at the News Letter and other titles owned by NI-born David Montgomery's National World are to strike next Monday, Friday, & the following Monday. There have been drastic cuts to the already small number of journalists - while the company pays profits to shareholders.
Press Gazette@pressgazette

330+ National World journalists are due to strike on Monday. A 4.5% pay rise was given in July but the NUJ said staff were left with "no option than to strike as they defend their calls for a fair pay rise and efforts to address growing pay disparities" nuj.org.uk/resource/natio…

@SJAMcBride I wonder what journalist made the FOI request in the first place, and for what reason. Whoever it was is keeping a VERY low profile. Any thoughts Sam?

Dissident republicans failed to drive out thousands of Catholics from the PSNI. But now the force is self-sabotaging in this area with astonishing speed — and the reasons for that are not even beginning to be addressed by either the police or its watchdog. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/column…

The scale of illegal waste dumped at a huge 116-acre site which is leaching into Londonderry’s drinking water is vastly greater than previously thought, experts have found - and that means the cost to taxpayers is likely to now massively increase. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/environme…

@SJAMcBride @pressgazette @edwardlmccann Are you being serious? Not clickbait? It's your business model, and not a very good one if 10k subscribers is all you've snagged. The sums just won't add up to sustain the business.

This success hasn't been about tricking readers or pouring out misleading clickbait for short-term results, but about doing serious journalism. In February, @pressgazette examined why the Telegraph's subscription model was working. As @edwardlmccann said then: Do good journalism.

Sincere thanks to all of you who've supported @BelTel by subscribing. We've just passed 10,000 digital subscribers (up from 4,000 two years ago) & our website won a second UK-wide award. For all its flaws, journalism improves society - but it costs money. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-…
