Threats to elections are real, and safeguarding democracy is an essential pillar of security—in NATO and beyond. On 7 July, @Int_IDEA, with support from the @DutchMFA and the @Clingendaelorg, convened a high-level panel discussion, The Ballot Battlefield, Frontline Moldova: Democratic Resilience as First Line of Defence, on the margins of the @NATO Summit 2026 in Ankara as part of the @MunSecConf’s Allies in Ankara partnership. The discussion featured Ms. Tanja Röling, Strategy Director at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Dana Munteanu, Secretary of the @CECMoldova, and was moderated by International IDEA's Director for Europe, Mr. @samvanderstaak. Drawing on Moldova's recent electoral experience, the panel explored practical lessons for strengthening democratic resilience in an increasingly contested security environment. Key themes included the importance of cross-sector collaboration, leveraging multilateral platforms such as NATO, engaging international partners, maintaining public trust in democratic institutions, and bringing the private sector into the conversation to strengthen resilience against emerging threats. What happens when people stop trusting the rules? In a new commentary, @Int_IDEA's @aliscrut argues that a recent controversy at the FIFA World Cup offers a striking parallel to one of democracy's biggest challenges: the erosion of trust in institutions. Drawing comparisons between disputes over football decisions and efforts to cast doubt on election outcomes, the piece explores how allegations of manipulation can weaken confidence in rules-based systems, even when evidence is lacking. As democracies around the world confront declining trust in institutions, the commentary asks an important question: what happens when suspicion becomes more powerful than facts? Join International IDEA and partners in the SDG 16 Data Initiative during the High-Level Political Forum for an online discussion on how non-official data is helping fill critical evidence gaps, reveal global trends in governance, justice and inclusion, and inform priorities for the post-2030 development agenda. The discussion will draw on the latest findings from the SDG 16 Data Initiative, bringing together experts from @Int_IDEA, @Law_Democracy (Centre for Law and Democracy), @TAPNetwork2030, @TheWJP and @SmallArmsSurvey to explore what the data tells us, where the gaps remain, and why better evidence matters for better policy. The SDG 16 Data Initiative is a consortium of 18 organizations coordinated by International IDEA that produce data that complement official UN statistics to track progress on SDG 16. As the world enters the final stretch toward 2030, it is critical to accurately track and boost progress on SDG 16, as an enabler of the entire 2030 Agenda that provides the governance foundations for progress across all the Sustainable Development Goals. What does renewing democracy look like in practice? As part of our #RenewingDemocracy campaign, we are highlighting examples of how people around the world are strengthening democratic values through innovation, participation and community action. In Kenya, young innovators participating in @NuruTrustKenya's Code for Human Rights program developed civic technology solutions addressing challenges ranging from gender-based violence and community resilience to government accountability and climate security. As a partner of the @GloDemCoalition, hosted by @Int_IDEA, @NuruTrustKenya is demonstrating how locally driven innovation can strengthen participation, expand access to information and create new pathways for communities to engage with institutions. The solutions showcased at Afro Tech 2026 shared a common principle: technology should not only solve problems, but do so in ways that protect rights, promote inclusion and respond to local realities. At a time when many are asking how democracy can better respond to people's needs, these young innovators offer a compelling reminder that the people closest to a challenge are often closest to its solution.
