International IDEA’s Council of Member States convened for its spring session on 28 April. Director General @RKVerma_IAS of @IIIDEM_Official chaired the meeting as the representative of Chair, India 🇮🇳, alongside Vice Chairs Mexico 🇲🇽 @EmbaMexSue and Mauritius 🇲🇺. #IDEACouncil, comprising of 35 Member States and 1 Observer, reviewed key results from 2025, were informed of India’s priorities as Chair, exchanged on topical initiates on democracy, security and resilience and advanced core institutional matters. We thank for a productive meeting and look forward to continued cooperation in support of #RenewingDemocracy.

Gabon’s Parliament, in collaboration with International IDEA, with the support of @DUEauGabon, organised a three-day seminar on legislative drafting, amendment procedures, and parliamentary ethics. The seminar aims to strengthen the capacity of newly elected parliamentarians at the start of their five-year term.

El diálogo con IDEA confirma que la justicia electoral ya no puede entenderse sólo como resolución de conflictos, sino como garantía efectiva de derechos. La justicia cercana que hoy impulsamos es, en buena medida, la traducción institucional de ese enfoque: reducir distancias, remover barreras y hacer que los derechos sean realmente ejercibles. Who controls the minerals controls the future. At our High-Level Workshop in Banjul, one session went to the heart of a defining tension in the Sahel: natural resources, critical minerals, and what their governance or misgovernance means for regional security. The Sahel and West Africa sit on some of the world's most sought-after critical minerals: gold, lithium, uranium, and cobalt. Global powers are competing for access. Regional states are negotiating their terms. And the governance frameworks that should manage this are often weak, opaque, or absent. Natural resources governance, democratic accountability, and regional security are inseparable. That was one of the core messages from our High-Level Workshop in Banjul, 23–24 April 2026.

Today in The Gambia, MISAHEL and partners officially kicked off a High-Level Workshop on Strengthening Security and Stabilisation in the Sahel and West Africa: Bridging Good Governance, Regional Cooperation, and Multilateral Responses at @Bjlconvention. The dialogue aims to address urgent regional realities, including escalating terrorism and violent extremism, complex political transitions, and the growing risk of instability spilling into coastal states. This workshop brought together the African Union, Sahel Special Envoys, Foreign Ministers, ECOWAS, AES, Policymakers, and various Ambassadors from across the region.
