This piece by Christopher is unfortunately very accurate. I’ve noticed a recurring theme: if you’re not an American athlete achieving these historic times, it can’t be considered genuine. When Keni Harrison clocked 12.20 seconds and initially broke the 28-year-old record in 2016, she was praised. Keni was clearly capable of running that fast then, so how is it that Tobi wouldn’t be capable of running 0.08 seconds faster six years later with favourable conditions and advancements in technology, tracks, and shoes? I could go on and on. I’m not suggesting for one second that any athlete should be questioned if they happen to set a world record; I’m merely linking it to my point that if you’re American, you’re less likely to be scrutinised or questioned by the media when setting a record or personal best, especially in comparison to an African athlete. Tobi Amusan deserves an apology. In fact, she deserves more than that. We need coverage that is unbiased and fair to all athletes, regardless of nationality. There are a few notable individuals who try their absolute best to create space for everyone in the sport—you know who you are 💙

Michael Johnson might be getting all the sticks (and deservedly so), but there were journalists who actively hounded Tobi Amusan, writing articles that tried to discredit her. Even fellow athletes contributed to the level of scrutiny Tobi faced after that record. Because MJ had to even quote Cindy Ofili-Sember as saying in the mixed zone, "I thoroughly (thought) I was running slow..." when he doubted if the timer was accurate. She ran a British record of 12.50s, and then 12.38s in the final. Before that semis, her PB was 12.53s, so why would people think 0.03 was such a big leap? To journalists like Jonathan Gault and Cathal Dennehy - those ones wrote articles questioning the shoes she ran with, and were the first to amplify the AIU incident, thinking it would stick. I remember Jonathan even questioning if the wind gauge picked up midway in the race (semis). Cathal in Budapest, caused a scene in the mixed zone when he interrupted my interview with Tobi, asking her about the AIU suspension. It didn't end there, he wrote an article calling me "a fan with a smartphone," one for standing up to him, and also for using my voice as a Nigerian journalist to speak up for Tobi. Maybe he felt World Athletics shouldn't accredit me for subsequent World Champs. The witchhunt Tobi has faced is because she is Nigerian. I have seen her (African Games 2024) go through an arduous length to update her whereabouts, despite the then AFN Secretary (Rita Mosindi) sending an email of where all the Nigerian athletes can be found and their room numbers in Accra. There was an internet outage in Ghana for about 4days, but Tobi knowing what she had faced to clear her name in 2023, was driven for hours until she got stable network to update her portal. She couldn't rely solely on AFN's email, because if a system is out to get you, they won't stop until they do. Suddenly, 12.1s looks attainable because it's not a Nigerian running it now. I agree with you that the track community owe that girl an apology.... "let the apology be as loud as the doubt."

Oh lets stop pretending we don’t know why … It’s because she was an athlete from an African country. If it were an American, European (or hell even a Jamaican) no one would’ve bat an eyelid

🗣️ “In 2022, when she ran fast, everyone had an opinion…now that the times have filled in these last few years since Eugene, suddenly that world record is legit.” After Masai Russell’s blazing start to 2026, @TheRealMerb makes the case that it’s time to make amends with Tobi Amusan, whose 100m hurdles world record at the 2022 World Championships got buried under doubt and controversy instead of being celebrated. 🎧 Full discussion on the CITIUS MAG Podcast’s latest “This Week In Track and Field” episode. I must admit, I’ve been quite disappointed to see some prominent track and field accounts covering the Enhanced Games. From a marketing perspective, it’s clear that Fred Kerley claimed he would break the 100m world record simply to attract a larger audience to tune in. Once again, it worked. Anyone who follows the sport appreciates how extraordinary 9.58 seconds is. That’s a time that is likely to remain in the record books for many years to come. While the prize money on offer was undoubtedly something rarely seen in athletics, I have no sympathy for anyone who chose to take part. Those athletes made the decision to associate themselves with the event. Is it really worth sacrificing your entire career and reputation for a single pay cheque? It takes more than drugs to become one of the best. Natural talent, hard work, and dedication are essential to reaching a world-class level in any sport. Overall, the event was a failure. Only one world record was broken throughout the entire evening, which highlighted the exact opposite of what the event intended to achieve. This is the last time I’m talking about this, as it doesn’t deserve any more publicity.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. 11.25 win 250k 11.43- 125k 11.48- 75k 11.6- 50k They just paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for high school times. Good for the athletes for making $$. But what an absolute failure of “enhancing” anything.

Well, his athlete competed in both stops of the diamond league, so I’m guessing he’s referring to her. 🤷🏾‍♂️
