A female elephant sees a baby hippopotamus leave its herd and toddle off toward the lake to play. Knowing that crocodiles are lurking in the water, it tries to chase the baby hippo back to the safety of its group. 💖✨ When it meets the mother hippo, it’s basically like: “Please keep an eye on your child, ma’am hippo.” 😔

How did the elephants know? Two days after a South African conservationist named Lawrence Anthony passed of a heart attack in 2012, two herds of wild elephants walked for twelve hours through the bush to reach his house at the Thula Thula reserve in eastern South Africa. Twenty-one animals in total, who had not been to the house in over a year, arriving on their own without anyone calling them or leading them. Lawrence was the man who’d saved them. Years earlier the herd had been marked for shooting after escaping multiple enclosures and rampaging through populated land. He took them in when no one else would, camped near them for weeks, talked to them, sang to them, slowly earning the trust of the matriarch, Nana. They had lived peacefully on his reserve ever since. They stood at his property for two days, making low rumbling calls, restless, ears flaring. Then they turned and walked back into the bush. The next year, on the anniversary of his passing, they came back. And the year after that. And the year after that. Nobody can fully explain it. Elephants communicate over long distances using infrasound, low-frequency rumbles that travel for miles below the range of human hearing. They have the largest brain of any land animal, with a memory and a capacity for grief that researchers are still trying to measure. They mourn their own dead, sometimes returning to bones years later and gently touching them. Whether what happened at Thula Thula was a herd somehow sensing the loss of a man they’d bonded with, or a coincidence reframed by grief, is something even the people who were there have stopped trying to settle. Lawrence’s wife Françoise, who was at the house when the herd arrived, has said the simplest thing about it. “Some things in this world cannot be explained by reason. Cannot be seen.”

Waking up the Elephant way ❤️. Natibu was rescued in 2023, when he was just a small baby. He was found submerged and stuck inside a manhole. He arrived at our Kaluku Unit deeply traumatised, especially in any sort of confined space. Even his stable, which most orphans see as a safe space, seemed to give him echoes of the manhole. The Keepers patiently earned his trust, showing him that he was loved and in good hands. Thus, to see him so comfortable inside his bedroom was a triumph indeed. Natibu has already come so far, but his journey with us is just beginning. You can become part of his story by adopting him, as a gift for yourself or someone special: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/natibu 🎦 Credit: @SheldrickTrust.

During filming of The Myth (2005), Jackie Chan formed a real bond with an elephant named Lakshmi in Hampi, India. In one scene, when he was pushed into the water, her reaction was completely unscripted, she reached out with her trunk to “save” and comfort him.

Elephants always know. Nearly every time a new class of graduates arrives at Ithumba, ex-orphans appear out of the woodwork to welcome them. This time, it was Ndiwa’s turn. We hadn’t seen the ten-year-old (who is now leading a fully wild life) since February — but right on schedule, she turned up at Ithumba to welcome Toto, Mwinzi, and Natibu into the fold. Ndiwa, who made the same move from the Nursery eight years ago, must have remembered all the feelings that come with graduating, because she was gentle and welcoming and understanding.

Olomunyak has a penchant for stealing his friends' food. By day, he can be found padding around with Alia, helping himself to the tasty leaves and branches she has selected. By night, we catch him scooping pellets from neighbour Arthi's stockade – never mind the fact that he has his own perfectly generous pile to enjoy! But Olomunyak is such a sunny, kind-hearted elephant that no one seems to mind. It just adds to his charm. Olomunyak was orphaned as a young calf. After a long, scary stretch trying to fend for himself, he has found a family with us and a wild future to look forward to. Discover his story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/olomun…

In 2015, Ellie - a baby elephant in South Africa was abandoned by her herd due to a severe umbilical abscess and hernia, leaving her in a critical condition. When she was brought to the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage, the veterinarians believed she had only a 1% chance of survival 💔 After her external wounds were treated, Ellie still suffered from severe depression and had lost the will to live after being abandoned. In response, the rescue team decided to place her with Duma, a retired service dog living at the center. The result was astonishing: from the very moment they met, Ellie completely changed. From a sad and withdrawn baby elephant, she became playful, curious, and joyful again. The two quickly became inseparable best friends. Duma helped Ellie rediscover happiness and learn to love life once more 💖 “Animals can teach us a lot about humanity.” ✨

Grief is not uniquely human. #Elephant Mother not able to comprehend death of her calf. She keeps dragging body for some time, at times for days. They are so like us. Mourning, remembering, refusing to let go. This we documented in nov 2024.

A man in Malaysia was asking strangers for coins, but the most unexpected gift he got that day came from an elephant. He was sitting with a cup in front of him when an elephant happened to walk by and seemed to pause for a moment, almost like it was trying to understand what it was seeing. Then, about an hour later, the elephant came back. This time, it walked up to the man and dropped something into his cup. But it was not money. The elephant had filled the cup with water, as if it thought the man was thirsty and was trying to help the only way it knew how. The man was left stunned for a second, then laughed and thanked the elephant for the strange but surprisingly thoughtful gift.
