Medical student Ben Cooper is spending his summer in Boone, Iowa, gaining firsthand experience in rural health care. From the OR and emergency department to family medicine and the lab, he's seeing how collaborative, patient-centered care supports communities across rural Iowa.

Medical student Akshaj Joshi is spending his summer studying hemispatial neglect, a condition often seen after stroke where patients lose awareness of one side of the body. Using brain mapping techniques, he hopes to better understand recovery and predict which patients may develop lasting symptoms.

Teri Wahlig (87MD) has helped expand and strengthen pediatric specialty care across Iowa through her leadership at @ChildServe, Iowa’s only children’s specialty hospital. Cory Karasek is spending part of their summer in Ecuador, gaining hands-on experience in the pediatrics department at the general hospital in Riobamba while strengthening their Spanish medical vocabulary. 🩺 Outside the hospital and Spanish class, Cory has also had time to explore Ecuador, including Baños and a hike at Cotopaxi.

Balancing medical school and marathon training takes planning, flexibility, and dedication. For medical student Maddie Block, running is a passion, a challenge, and something that keeps her grounded. This spring, Maddie raced in the pro field of the Boston Marathon, an experience she called “a dream come true.” She also qualified for the 2028 Olympic Trials in the marathon.

Richard Shields (85MA) has helped shape the future of physical therapy education and spinal cord injury research.
