Dancing, not fighting cancer Dr. Deming: I encourage physical activity. You can use whatever metaphor you chose. Not very comforting if living with incurable cancer. Then like climbing a mountain. How do you live life in finding joy in a tough situation.

Dr. Deming: Screening is important - you can have no symptoms and still have cancer. Key tests now exist. Screening helps get treatment earlier. Lung cancer can be screened for. Educate on screening and limit barriers.

Breakthroughs in clinical research Dr. Weiner: Mortality from cancer has dropped 30% in my career. Helping those we couldn't before. We've been able to understand why cancers go haywire and medicines that go right to the targeted areas. Progress is happening.

Dr. Deming: There's good in studying population health - but takes longer. Genetic mutations are a part as well. Getting older is a factor as well. If too granular in zip code looking, but aggregating is key. Reporting helps research as well.

U of I researchers map of risk areas - misleading? Dr. Weiner: Not quite, but not the final word. That's a place to start. We need to understand why that is and how can reverse it. These data are a vital first step. Then we can dig in to help reduce in the future.

Behavioral issues Dr. Deming: If you put food you eat, obesity and lack of physical activity is a huge influence on the risks for cancer - like smoking levels. We can modify behaviors, maybe eliminate 42% of cancers, 45% of deaths. Look at factors not certain of as well.

Dr. Deming: We need to bring carrots and sticks to help mitigate the problem. Dr. Weiner: Studying these links of nitrates and cancer is important. Part is the exposure years and decades ago as well. Shouldn't be afraid to do the research to get answers.

High nitrate levels in water Dr. Deming: There's a link between certain cancers and nitrates. Some want a smoking gun to connect, difficult to ascertain. We know the association. Fact sheets exist. We've known this has a consequence for many things - Gulf of Mexico issues.

Radon mitigation requirements Dr. Deming: There isn't one answer. We had the school safety bill passed years ago. It took years to get that bill across the finish line. Test the schools, homes and mitigate. All voluntary now. Maybe require new builds, sales.
