Good morning! It's still windy out there, causing major road issues. Both major interstates in northern and central Iowa remain closed, with travel not advised on many other highways. The wind will slowly subside throughout the day with near-record cold air.

The Blizzard Warning has been extended until 10 AM this morning (Monday 3/16/26).

BREAKING: A Blizzard Warning has been issued for @IowaStateU from 1 PM Sunday through 7 AM Monday for 2-4" of snow & blizzard conditions. A High Wind Warning will run from 1 PM Sunday until 4 AM Monday for wind gusts up to 65 MPH.

Near-record cold remains in place on Monday. The winds will slowly decrease through the day and into the evening. Blowing snow issues will still be in place during the morning. Expect wind chills below 0ºF nearly the entire day! 🥶

Iowa State University will partially close on Monday, March 16th, as blizzard conditions settle into the area. Classes are already recessed for spring break, but campus buildings will be locked, and Rec Services will be closed.

BREAKING: The Iowa DOT is closing I-35 from Highway 30 at Ames to the Minnesota border starting at 3 PM today due to blizzard conditions iowadot.gov/news/2026-03-1…

The rain portion of the system is complete & we will have a break until late afternoon. Snow is next with increasing winds tonight. Temperatures will begin to plunge after 5 PM. Precip will be done by midnight with blowing snow continuing.

A classic, potent winter storm will barrel through the Midwest tomorrow, bringing rain, snow, & extreme winds. Ames will be on the lower end of snow totals, but will still have blizzard conditions. Expect AM rain, PM mix/snow then blowing snow. Near-record cold follows Monday!

A High Wind Watch has been issued for campus from 1 PM Sunday through 4 AM Monday for wind gusts up to 60 MPH.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Story County from 7 PM Sunday through 10 AM Monday for up to 3" of snow and potential blizzard conditions. Winds will be gusting up to 50 MPH on Sunday night.

If you are headed out of town, it will be best to leave before Sunday. A larger winter storm will move in on Sunday and cause a rain/snow mix in Ames. Heavy snow will be possible in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Any snow will be blowing around with wind gusts up to 50 MPH possible.

It will be a windy Friday with cooler conditions continuing. Wind chills will stay in the 30s all day long.

Winds are starting to pick up and will become extreme overnight. Wind gusts up to 60 MPH are likely tonight as a strong storm passes to our north. A High Wind Warning is in effect from 10 PM tonight through 10 AM Friday. The winds should slowly subside on Friday.
