Today during a Foreign Affairs hearing, Congressman Keith Self delivered two powerful statements during a markup session of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, reaffirming Kosovo’s strategic importance to NATO, regional stability, and U.S. national interests in the Western Balkans. As Chairman of the Europe Subcommittee, Congressman Self described Kosovo as “one of the closest and most loyal European partners to the United States” and warned that continued refusal by some NATO members to recognize Kosovo undermines long-term stability in the Balkans and strengthens the influence of adversaries such as Russia. Referencing his own role in the planning of NATO’s 1999 intervention against Serbian ethnic cleansing, he emphasized that Kosovo has demonstrated a clear commitment to democracy, regional security, and multiethnic coexistence, making a compelling case for NATO membership. In a separate speech honoring Eliot Engel, Congressman Self stated that Eliot Engel remains “a hero in Kosovo” and argued that Engel understood Kosovo’s critical role as a “linchpin of stability in the Western Balkans.” He also pointed to the contradiction of praising Kosovo’s strongest allies in Washington while failing to fully support Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic integration and long-term security. These remarks represent some of the clearest and strongest statements heard in Congress in support of Kosovo’s sovereignty, NATO future, and strategic importance to peace and stability in the region.
