One reason these incidents, such as forcibly snatching Iraqi flags, which happened today amid celebrations for Iraq qualifying for the World Cup, are so damaging, beyond the fact that they are illegal, is that they carry political costs for the KDP in Iraq. This video is a good example. It was shared by an MP from the Abshir Ya Iraq faction, and it is also spreading widely across Iraqi social media. That matters because Abshir Ya Iraq is in the Maliki camp in the current battle over the presidency and premiership, the same camp the KDP is aligned with. Videos like this make that alignment harder to sustain, especially at the MP level, where many politicians are more populist and more sensitive to public sentiment. This also helps explain why the PUK often finds it easier to maintain ties with some Iraqi factions. It is not only about Iran, as is often claimed. That may be one factor, but there is also a clear Iraqi dimension. Many of these factions see the PUK as less overtly anti-Iraq, which makes it easier for them to justify working with it. The KDP, by contrast, has in fact tried to soften its messaging on Iraq. Nechirvan Barzani, Masoud Barzani, and Hoshyar Zebari all congratulated the Iraqi national team. But that becomes harder to sell when videos like this emerge from Erbil. Many Iraqis interpret such incidents as something the KDP could stop if it wanted to, and therefore as something it is at least tolerating. Whether fair or not, that perception matters. In that sense, these incidents are a net negative for the KDP. They damage its image in Iraq and make it harder for Iraqi factions, especially more populist MPs, to openly align with it.
