@VeryBadLlama Probably all lies anyway; my grandparents grew up in the Great Depression and they'd look at you like you had two heads if you suggested a regular person should never eat out.

Actually, there’s not very much that teaches people HOW to do these things. Cooking, sure, but there’s a lack of foundational knowledge that is creating a skill gap. Going on TikTok or on Food Network is useless because it’s collections of specialty recipes or high-end competition. You won’t succeed, in the kitchen or financially, if you pick 5 TikTok recipes, all of which use specialty ingredients, and try to do that as a week of cooking. It’s expensive, and you do waste a lot. What’s lacking is (1) knowing how to shop and stock a pantry, (2) knowing the Alton Brown-style scientific basics of how to cook food, even without a recipe, and (3) how to plan a weeks worth of meals so that you’re shopping efficient and not burning out. If you try to cook based on television shows, Instagram influence accounts, and Sur-La-Table retail cooking classes, you will fail. You’ll burn out. This actually isn’t as simple as you think.

@emzanotti There are so many shows and websites and all for anyone who wants to learn. Cooking classes in person in any big city. If they want to learn, it's easy. They have to snap out of playing the helpless victim first.

@emzanotti I’ve been telling my kids since toddlers that they need to learn to cook because when I went to uni there were people who couldn’t feed themselves. Then we laugh at the idea. Let’s bring that energy back. What do you MEAN you can’t scramble an egg at 19?

Every few months it becomes clear that I should probably teach the internet how to make food and run a household, because it’s clearly a massive need, but I just don’t know how to get started.

@BradfemlyWalsh They also think it’s living in poverty to eat the same food two days in a row? My 10 and 8 year old made dinner the other day (meatballs, rice, maple carrots). They can make basic meals because I told them it’s the most important skill I can teach them! Maybe Alpha will save us.

I do find the angry insistence of Gen Z that they cannot possibly learn to cook very baffling. Like, do they think all the older generations were born with some miracle innate set of cooking skills that they've missed out on? Does it not occur to them that we had to learn too?

@emzanotti I like this! I also strongly support weekly meal plans. You don’t need to eat chili every Monday, but if you know that Mon will use ground beef/turkey you can pick from a small set of meals (chili, bolognese, tacos etc). Tuesday is eggs, Wed beans etc. Cook 2x and freeze.

I teach home ec! I even have a handy dandy graphic for how to stock a pantry so that you can make meals on the fly (Substack at link in bio).

@emzanotti @BridgetPhetasy The entire gamut of replies shows that the major issue is not how to cook a meal, but how to manage a pantry, what to do with leftovers, how to keep a clean kitchen, how to utilize basic ingredients for multiple dishes, etc. We used to call this…Home Ec. I took it in HS in 1994!

@CraigBaird It’s so great, especially the huge sloping hall right inside that looks out at parliament. I’m not crazy about the spider statue out front, but I guess she’s iconic by now.

@paulvieira Yes, put buses from Barrhaven/kanata back on Slater. We were right to get rid of the parking lot that it was but there’s room to bring back east-west options to ease the train and make the commute work.

@_celia_bedelia_ Scrambled eggs and toast. Fried egg sandwiches. Tuna melts. Fucking pasta. All ready in less time than scrolling an app and waiting for delivery. This is insane, and we’re insane for indulging it.

@JillFilipovic My 10yo can make a stir fry with rice noodles, peppers, teriyaki sauce. It takes little time, money or equipment. One could add frozen shrimp/ground turkey/canned tuna etc. 8yo made maple glazed carrots and rice the other day to go with meatballs I made. Teach kids to cook!

Every aspect of this debate is making me want to hurl myself off a cliff. No, you do not need to eat PB&J and chips for lunch every single day to save money. There is in fact an enormous universe of food that is simple to prepare, healthier than DoorDash, and way more affordable than DoorDash.

@MadelaineLucyH Is there an explanation for why I can read long, multi-generational sagas with many names but not thrillers where everyone is referred to by last name only? Rose, Bianca, Adele is fine; Harrison, Martineau and Slopanski I’ll never keep straight.

Everyone has a different threshold of abstraction when reading. I can handle one character being called Thenape for example but remembering 20+ called Xlayadon and Xlandor is a no. Similarly, I’m absolutely a-okay with ghosts and baffled by and skeptical about self-aware robots. PLEASE bare that in mind when reading beta feedback!

I’ve been thinking a lot about this “what is professional for work” conversation too much (k*ll me) and I really think your ideas of what you *should* and *should not* wear to work absolutely evolves as you get older & enter into different leadership positions. I’ve managed to keep my personal style through the years but I definitely dress more “conservatively” than I did in my 20s & 30s & even more conservatively than I did 2 years ago.
