Today in 1920, the Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of Cork, Tomas MacCurtain was assassinated by covert RIC squad in revenge for the shooting of a policeman by the IRA, which MacCurtain had, ironically, opposed. His killing led to a hardening of the Cork IRA theirishstory.com/2020/03/23/the…

The Irish state in WWII was not pro-German (at all), but nor was its neutrality entirely pro-Allied as some would maintain. It's quite a complicated story. But here's an overview that hopefully conveys the basic facts about 'The Emergency'. theirishstory.com/2018/05/21/the…

An accurate description of the SNP anno 2026: moribund, conciliatory, played by Westminster, pro-NATO war, out of touch. "The Irish Parliamentary Party became a very moribund political movement in a lot of parts of Ireland. So a new movement [Sinn Fein] coming along with a very clear set of objectives and ideals of where they wanted Ireland to go. They were very clearly in favour of an independent, sovereign, democratic Irish Republic. It's grasped the imagination of a lot of people in Ireland. And the Irish Parliamentary Party was viewed as too conciliatory. Seemed like they'd been played by Westminster so many times and ended up on the wrong side. Their support for the First World War, all these type of things, they were viewed as very conservative, out of touch and people whose time had passed, really." @SalvoHighlands @ScotSalvo @LiberateScot @LiberationScot @The_SSP_ @Broonpot @IrishHistoryPod @IndyScotParty @citizentommy

The 1918 election was a turning point for Ireland 🇮🇪 John Dorney and Cathal Brennan join @indyscotnews to explore the rise of Sinn Féin and the fall of the IPP. They offer insights into this crucial moment in history that’s not taught in schools in the remaining Celtic colonies 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #IrishHistory The 1918 election in Ireland was a historic vote in what was, essentially, a #PlebisciteElection followed by UDI. It saw the decline of the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) and the rise of Sinn Féin. Topics covered include: the impact of the First World War, the expansion of the franchise, and the changing political landscape in Ireland. Discover how the IPP's failure to secure Home Rule and the controversial conscription crisis contributed to its downfall, while Sinn Féin emerged as a powerful voice for Irish nationalism. Timeline: (00:00) John Dorney and Cathal Brennan look at the 1918 election in Ireland (10:58) Redmond takes IPP too far in the direction of pro-Union (18:27) Did Ireland have its own homegrown, indigenous media? (20:39) Unionism throughout Ireland after partition (24:18) Was it the conscription crisis that sealed IPP's fate in 1918? (27:21) How did London react to this breakaway move by its Irish colony? (32:51) Was the war of independence inevitable? Did it have to happen? @LiberateScot @LiberationScot @SSalyers2 @Documark @IrishHistoryPod @IndyScotParty @Indy4Indy @VoteSovereignty @AlbaParty @The_SSP_
