Chabhar is one major possibility if you use MEUs in an assault.
It's Iran's only deep water port on the open ocean. Meaning means some of the largest ships.
Some thoughts in response ⬇️
1. Port facilities can accommodate further follow up forces. Chabhar has a major roll on roll off capacity for logistics with 5 to 10 berths for ships and handles 8.5m tons per year. The larger major port facilities are west of the Strait like Bandar Abbas and Imam Khameni.
2. Doesn't require navigating the Strait of Hormuz. Or a barrage to get to Kharg. Both of which risk enfilade fire from missles and drones. The hairpin turn makes it a kill zone for a naval task force. A geographical feature that's been a historical major advantage to plugging it.
3. Relative isolation from the main network. Chabhar sits in one of the less dense ends of the Iranian road network. There is one primary artery Route 95. that does 90% of the work. That may takes longer for IRGC or Iran military to concentrate and move militart units there. As opposed to Bandar Abbas or Imam Khameni.
Now the other side of this. Context.
1. Taking this may bottleneck US forces. Just as this slows down reinforcement to the port? It also prevents or slows a possible breakout. You end up with a Gallipoli situation. With everyone stuck. There's also the possibility of IRGC or Iranian army prepositioned.
2. Foreign investments. India recently announced it has fully paid its $120 m commitment for port equipment at Chabhar. And in 2024 signed a 10 year agreement to operate the Shahid Beheshti Terminal. The danger is a landing or port seizure threatens those investments.
3. Won't be the only axis of advance. If the 82nd and 101st are in theater along with an MEU? It means they may be used at the same time any potential seaborne push. Air assaults, paradrop, or island seizure is a possibility. Tho a paradrops is less likely. Paradrops requires significantly more high level, theater-wide suppression.
Chabhar may or may not be the main effort if it goes down. But we'll know the order of battle when the MEUs and army units are all in theater.
