I was recently referred to a project manager who needed a designer urgently. I shared my portfolio almost immediately, she acknowledged it… then went silent. After 24 hours, I followed up. Her response? “Your designs do not meet the quality we require at the moment.” I won’t lie, that one landed heavier than expected. For a brief moment, I found myself questioning years of consistency, growth, and deliberate practice. I revisited my portfolio, carefully reviewing each piece… it still reflected my standards. I even reached out for clarification on their expectations, no response. Later, I updated the person who referred me. He simply laughed and said, “They can’t afford you.” And in that moment, everything made sense. I almost allowed a single opinion to distort a body of work built over time. A few reminders I took from this: It’s not always a question of quality, sometimes it’s simply a matter of budget. One perspective should never outweigh years of proven effort.
