Canada built the Gordie Howe International Bridge on its own. The project cost Canada 6.4 billion dollars, and Canadian workers completed every part of the 2.5-kilometre structure. Michigan did not pay for any of the construction. Even though ownership is shared, Canada paid the full bill and made sure the bridge would connect Windsor and Detroit. Construction continues right now, and the bridge is set to open in spring 2026. This shows that Canada took charge from the start and finished the job. Canada is also setting the terms for how the bridge will work. A 2012 agreement between the two countries is still in place, so Canada will collect all tolls until the project is paid back. After that, Michigan will receive a share of the profits. The toll prices are already decided at eight dollars for small cars and twelve dollars for larger vehicles. Windsor’s mayor has said the agreement is fair and there is no need to change it. Talks with the U.S. are still going on, but Canada has made it clear that the original deal stands. This puts Canada in the driver’s seat. Right now the U.S. ambassador calls the discussions promising, yet Canada is ready to open the bridge as soon as the final details are settled. Prime Minister Carney had to explain to Trump that Canada paid for everything and the bridge belongs to both sides under the old rules. Because Canada built the bridge and followed the plan, it controls the schedule and the money. Every month of delay costs jobs and business, but Canada is holding firm on its fair terms. Canada will stay in charge of the Gordie Howe International Bridge for years to come. 🇨🇦 #CanadaBuiltIt #CanadaInCharge
