New Publication Alert!🚨 In this paper, we explore whether extending the school day in Mexico reduced crime. We document that it does. Robbery dropped 11% in more exposed areas, mainly due to incapacitation. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

How do governments frame social policies? In my new article in @LAPSjournal (FirstView), I use text analysis (ALC embeddings) to show that ideology shapes how distributive policies are communicated: Left → social inclusion Right → productivity bit.ly/3OAlrK0

My first solo-authored publication is now out in @Journal_CompPol (FirstView) 🎉 Why would cash-transfer beneficiaries reduce support for these programs when poverty increases? I show that perceived ineffectiveness pushes recipients toward longer-term social investment policies.

UNC’s Institute for the Study of the Americas was instrumental to my graduate school career. Multiple research grants — including during COVID to conduct surveys — and a FLAS. Without them I wouldn’t have been able to complete my dissertation. This is horrible news.

BREAKING: UNC’s six area studies centers will officially close down, according to multiple sources close to the situation. These centers are the first of 14 total UNC centers and institutes to be cut. bit.ly/4qlujkt

Re-election means voters can hold elected officials accountable, but can it be effective where criminal groups shape local politics? In my new article in @BJPolS, I show that in high-crime areas of Mexico, re-election did not boost accountability, but increased collusion instead.
