Frank Auerbach (whose death was announced this morning) will be remembered as one of the major draughtsman of his age. He was the master of the hard-won image; he drew his sitters over and over again, erasing the image after each session so that only an outline remained and repeated the process until he felt he had captured the person’s essence. This is a self-portrait from 1958.

We’re probably gonna be unpopular for saying this, but we’re sick of seeing anything to do with ‘I’m a celeb’ The show relies on the abuse and exploitation of animals for cheap laughs and it’s sad that so many people still watch it and seem to have no issue with it!

Avoid acrylic and polyester if possible. There's a lot of recycled polyester now, which is much better, and a filter on washing machines would prevent the micro plastics that come off these fabrics.
Adrian Ramsay MP@AdrianRamsay

Microplastic pollution is a major scourge impacting rivers, seas, food supplies & our own bodies A simple measure like a fibre capture filter on washing machines would reduce the tide of fibres into the environment by 87% #EndPlasticSoup @WomensInstitute @carladenyer @natalieben

Please read this. It's literally been 8 years in the writing. The first wave of tech disruption of democracy 2016-2024 is over. What starts now is something much, much worse: the age of information chaos. 1/ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

OUTRAGEOUS: The Government could bow to pressure from building companies to weaken a promise that new houses will be built with solar panels. Sign the petition demanding the Government stick to its guns: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/comp… via @38degrees

It was obvious to any informed person, with their eyes open, that the Biodiversity Net Gain policy, would be abused to justify the destruction of important habitat. It is a horrible legalistic contrivance, and it means nothing. theguardian.com/environment/20… 1/4

Huge congrats to the amazing @ruthdavis27 on her new appointment as special envoy for nature. Nature couldn’t have a stronger or more fearless champion. Biodiversity is in freefall & more than ever we need real leadership which she will help deliver 👏 theguardian.com/environment/20…

I'm proud to be co-sponsoring the 'Sunshine Bill' introduced in Parliament yesterday☀ It's simple and obvious: new homes should be fitted with solar panels as standard!✅ This would bring down household bills, cut emissions, and help make every new home fit for the future!🏠

The PM's pledge to “cut red tape” is a tired cliché that often means harming environmental standards and workers’ rights. We’ve had fourteen years of successive Conservative governments promising to “cut red tape” - what do we have to show for it? theguardian.com/business/live/…

I was one of the few art historians signed on to this plea to spare two young people from prison for throwing soup on the glass of a Van Gogh painting. This was a non-violent form of symbolic protest that should not be prosecuted so severely. theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/s…

I pressed the government again yesterday to use the Planning and Infrastructure Bill to drive up new build housing standards: * solar panels on roofs as standard; * high insulation so that all new homes can be warm and affordable to heat.
