I attended a traditional Irish Wake in Sligo last year. The deceased lay in the front room of her house in a wicker coffin and everyone from the area came to pay their respects to the family and view the body. The kettle never stopped boiling. Neighbours brought food and condolences. The next morning she was carried on the shoulders of her family and friends the whole way to the church for her Funeral Mass.
