I searched a lot about that question and I might be the only one in the world that can answer that ! 📜The word "Palestine" is Greek. The name "Palestine" derives from the "Philistines" (Φιλιστίνοι). In ancient texts, I found the word "Palestine" (in ancient Greek as "Παλαιστίνῃ"), first in Herodotus but also later in Arrian and Romans. I will show you the ancient Greek texts and then the english translation. But first of all the etymology: I have a theory about what the word may means but it's my theory according to my knowledge about history and philology of the Greek language. 📖Palestine from the Greek word "Philistines" (Φιλιστίνοι) might means : "the people who loves to sail". That conclusion comes from the words -> [ φιλώ ή φίλος (the one who love) + ιστίο (the sail that is properly tied to a ship's mast) = Φιλιστίνοι = Philistine = Παλαιστίνῃ = Palestine ] That's why we Greeks, we use the word "ιστιο-φόρος" = the ship that has sail. Both words have same roots. So Palestine may means nothing today but it derives from an ancient Greek word that meant something about the skills of the Greek people living in this area. And it actually makes sense because Philistines were historically extremely good sailors as we know. It is archaeologically plausible that there is an origin and consequently a connection with certain tribes that departed from ancient Crete and are referred to, among other sources, in Linear B texts as "Pelestet. Also Egyptians were calling this territory as "Peleset". So my theory has a very good point I think. Also : The Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat stated in Athens on December 15, 1981: "We Palestinians originate from Crete. We left Crete and went to Palestine. We returned to Crete and left Crete again, and we went back and settled permanently in Palestine…" Now, we have some Greek sources from ancient texts. 🔴Herodotus writes (c. 484–425 B.C.) - Greek text : [7.89.1] Φοίνικες μὲν σὺν Συρίοισι τοῖσι ἐν τῇ Παλαιστίνῃ τριηκοσίας, ὧδε ἐσκευασμένοι· περὶ μὲν τῇσι κεφαλῇσι κυνέας εἶχον ἀγχοτάτω πεποιημένας τρόπον τὸν Ἑλληνικόν, ἐνδεδυκότες δὲ θώρηκας λινέους, ἀσπίδας δὲ ἴτυς οὐκ ἐχούσας εἶχον καὶ ἀκόντια. English translation : Now, twelve hundred and seven triremes were assembled, and these were the peoples who provided them: three hundred were from the Phoenicians along with the Syrians of Palestine, who were equipped as follows: they wore leather caps on their heads, very similar to those of the Greeks, and were clad in linen breastplates; they carried shields without rims and javelins. Now, these Phoenicians, as they themselves say, formerly dwelt on the shores of the Red Sea, and from there they crossed over and now inhabit the coastal regions of Syria. And this region of Syria, and all the land extending to Egypt, is called Palestine. That's one source. 🔴Another source about Palestine and Gaza is Arrian in his history about Alexander's campaign. Greek text : [2.25.4] Ἀλέξανδρος δὲ ἐπ᾽ Αἰγύπτου ἔγνω ποιεῖσθαι τὸν στόλον. καὶ ἦν αὐτῷ τὰ μὲν ἄλλα τῆς Παλαιστίνης καλουμένης Συρίας προσκεχωρηκότα ἤδη, εὐνοῦχος δέ τις, ᾧ ὄνομα ἦν Βάτις, κρατῶν τῆς Γαζαίων πόλεως, οὐ προσεῖχεν Ἀλεξάνδρῳ, ἀλλὰ Ἄραβάς τε μισθωτοὺς ἐπαγαγόμενος καὶ σῖτον ἐκ πολλοῦ παρεσκευακὼς διαρκῆ ἐς χρόνιον πολιορκίαν καὶ τῷ χωρίῳ πιστεύων μήποτε ἂν βίᾳ ἁλῶναι, ἔγνω μὴ δέχεσθαι τῇ πόλει Ἀλέξανδρον. english translation : Alexander then decided to undertake a naval expedition to Egypt. The rest of the so-called Palestinian Syria had already submitted to him; however, a certain eunuch named Batis, who held the city of Gaza, did not show obedience to Alexander. Instead, having gathered Arab mercenaries and stored grain for a long siege well in advance, he resolved not to admit Alexander into the city, believing that this fortified place could never be taken by assault.
