She characterised Israel’s position in a series of ‘baby’ voiced phrases, saying “Yeah but you know they did a bad thing to us… But we want that land and there’s a lot of history… These people are not even people, are they really?”

Today I’m toasting the 40th birthday of a man who did not live to see it. My beautiful husband Gordon Aikman died from Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 31. MND is one of the cruellest diseases and has no cure. But as Gordon’s body weakened and he lost the ability to walk, his strength, determination and voice grew. Being told he was going to die unleashed a fizzing campaigning force. He raised £500K for MND research, doubled the number of MND nurses in Scotland, and helped change the law so people who lose the ability to speak have a right to assistive technology. A terminal illness also gave Gordon clarity about making the most of his time left: from music to travels and endless flat parties. He taught me about resilience and patience and kindness. And we both learnt about the brilliance of carers, the complexities of disabled toilets, and how best to reverse an electric wheelchair in a confined space Life is full of ‘what ifs’ and it is hard not to imagine the life Gordon would have led. He was passionate about his work. He was desperate to see the children he loved grow up, and would have been a brilliant father.
