The Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus is a pearl of the Muslim world, where legendary scholars like Al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Ibn Arabi once resided. A beacon of Islamic learning and spiritual heritage. 🕌✨ #Damascus #IslamicHistory #Scholars #syria

Centuries ago, Muslims from the heart of Africa walked nearly 7,000 kilometers for Hajj. Not for days. Not for weeks. But for years. They crossed deserts on foot, travelled with livestock for food and survival, and spent entire lifetimes saving for one sacred journey to Makkah. Along the roads stood wells, inns, and shelters built by Muslim rulers and generous souls to serve the guests of Allah. Some pilgrims returned home after two years. Some stayed longer seeking knowledge in cities like Cairo and Damascus before finally returning with the honored title of “Hajji.” A reminder that for many before us, Hajj was not a trip. It was the journey of a lifetime.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler/wayfarer.” Ibn ‘Umar used to say: “When evening comes, do not expect (to live till) morning, and when morning comes, do not expect (to live till) evening. Take from your health (a preparation) for your illness, and from your life for your death.” [Al-Bukhari]

Masjid al-Haram in the 90s. Before the towers rose around it, the Haram felt open and serene, allowing pilgrims to focus solely on worship, reflection, and the sight of the Kaaba.

6/ Despite ruling an empire stretching from the Sahara to al-Andalus, sources like Ibn Idhari and al-Dhahabi mention his piety, simple clothing, avoidance of luxury, closeness to jurists, and personal humility. Medieval sources mention his close relationship with scholars and jurists, most famously Imam Al-Ghazali. Imam Al-Ghazali supported the removal of the taifa rulers, viewing their divisions and alliances with Christian kingdoms as a danger to Islam in al-Andalus. Even after defeating Alfonso VI at Az-Zallaqah and becoming the most powerful Muslim ruler in the western Islamic world, Yusuf continued to live more like a desert ascetic than an imperial monarch.

5/ Yusuf ibn Tashfin, at the time, was seventy years old. His empire was stable, and every rational argument pointed toward staying home. He crossed into al-Andalus anyway. At Az-Zallaqah in 1086, his strategy shattered the army of Alfonso VI in a single afternoon. The battlefield became so drenched in blood that the Arabs called it “Az-Zallaqah” — “the slippery ground.” Because of that victory, al-Andalus survived for four more centuries, four centuries of the Alhambra, of Córdoba’s scholarship, of Ibn Rushd and Ibn Arabi, of poetry, science, architecture, and a civilization the world nearly lost forever.

You have all heard of Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi — The sword of Islam, The liberator of Jerusalem. But do you know that before him, a 70-year-old Sultan from the heart of the Sahara Desert, walked into the jaws of the most powerful Christian army in Europe, and saved Islam in the West? His name was Yusuf ibn Tashfin, and what he did in 1086 will leave you speechless. 👇🧵

Haqq. As a convert from Catholicism, the very first surahs of the Qur'an that Allah showed me, other than the Fatiha, were Imran and Maryam. There, I learned the truth about 'Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus) and Maryam (Mary), alayhima salaam. The accounts set forth by Allah were far more moving and astounding than anything I ever learned from the "Gospels."

In Christianity, the first public miracle of Jesus is turning water into wine at a wedding. In Islam, the first miracle of Jesus is speaking from the cradle to defend the honor of his mother Maryam against slander. A far more noble beginning.
