Quentin Tarantino says he personally choked Diane Kruger on the set of Inglourious Basterds (2009) because he thought fake movie choking never looked convincing. In the scene where Bridget von Hammersmark is killed after being exposed as a spy, Tarantino feared Christoph Waltz would either choke Kruger “too much or too little,” so he “literally took matters into his own hands and did the scene himself.” “What I said to her was, ‘I’m gonna just strangle you, alright? Full on, I’m gonna cut off your air, for just a little bit of time. We’re gonna see the reaction in your face and I’m gonna yell cut.’” Tarantino later explained: “If it’s just a guy with his hands on your neck, not putting any kind of pressure and you’re just doing this wiggling death rattle, it looks like a normal movie strangulation.” Kruger later reflected on the moment herself. “I have to say it was very strange being strangled by the director.” “For the record, however, my work experience with Quentin Tarantino was pure joy.
