I’ve said this before and the point still stands
Privately, many founders say they’re bearish on the metaverse, web3 gaming, Otherside, Nifty Island or whatever version of that idea
And most of the time the reason isn't some deep thesis
It’s because they lost money
Their bags are down. Their conviction got nuked. So now the whole category is “dead”
Which is fine. Just say that
But the weird part is when the same people are asking everyone else to keep believing in their NFT project that is also down 99% from all-time highs, has not proven meaningful monetization, and still needs people to believe in some future version of the thing
So what exactly is the difference?
You don’t believe in digital collectibles?
You don’t believe in digital native IP?
You don’t believe gaming belongs in web3?
You don’t think a web3-native Roblox or Fortnite style world makes sense?
Okay
Then what is the future of your project?
Because if the answer is just “our community should keep holding while we chase memes, attention, or whatever is hot this quarter,” then maybe the issue is not the metaverse
Maybe the issue is that a lot of people are only here for the money, but still want to talk like they’re building "culture"
I don’t think the metaverse has everything figured out. Obviously not
But scapegoating the biggest entertainment category on earth while asking people to believe in your own 99% down digital asset is a strange kind of misalignment
Either you believe digital ownership, IP, gaming, identity, and internet-native communities are going somewhere...
or you should all just be honest about what game you’re actually playing
