@PadreBod Yet, objectively the Padres would be in a better spot if this trade never happened. The outfield would be one of if the not best in the league. The money the Padres paid to Xander could be for pitching. The Soto trade was a WS push move and it objectively failed at that.

Padres fans love saying, 'We gave up James Wood, C.J. Abrams, and MacKenzie Gore for Juan Soto,' but they stopped the conversation right there. Preller didn't just trade for a generational left bat. He flipped Soto before free agency and turned one year of control into actual pitching depth. From New York, they got Michael King, Randy Vasquez, Jhony Brito, Drew Thorpe, and Kyle Higashioka in that deal. Thorpe became the centerpiece for the Dylan Cease trade. King turned into a front line starter. Vasquez gave rotation innings. Brito offered depth. Higashioka provided solid veteran catching and a really good offensive year before moving on. That's the actual arc. Prospects became Soto, then Soto became King, Vasquez, Brito, Higashioka and eventually Cease. That's not a front office asleep at the wheel. That's a front office actually using assets instead of letting talent walk for nothing. Context matters. Transaction trees matter. And the Padres are still benefiting from that pivot today.

@Jake_A___ @Peter_Bukowski Careful Jake. I’m a packers fan and I saw him do a lot of damage from his left too. His mobility will be gone in about 3-4 years, but until it is, he has the arm strength to throw it from anywhere. Have to muster the 3 years.

Caleb is wildly dangerous in two minute and comeback situations, but the idea he’s some super closer is not born out by the facts and also elides him being bad for three quarters first. You can’t win like that over time. It doesn’t work. It’s never happened.
