#SecurityAlert Iran and Houthis Seek to Draw Al-Shabaab into Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Operations Iran and the Houthis are pushing Al-Shabaab to become involved in future operations in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Reliable sources indicate that Iran has directly contacted senior Al-Shabaab leaders, requesting that they cooperate with the Houthis in potential operations that could be carried out on both sides of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Military officials from Iran reportedly met with representatives from Al-Shabaab and the Houthis at the port of Hodeidah in Yemen in mid-March 2026. Al-Shabaab was promised that, if the conflict concludes, it would receive significant financial and military support, potentially the largest Iran has ever provided to the group. The identities of the Al-Shabaab members who traveled to Yemen have been kept highly confidential. However, it has been confirmed that they were not the usual operatives known to move between that region and the Golis Mountains, but rather members of Al-Shabaab based outside the country.
