@JAGarrick I recommend ‘A Swim in a Pond in the Rain’ by George Saunders in which he breaks down the art of short fiction through close reading of short stories by Chekhov, Tolstoy, Turgenev and Gogol. Not so much about the mechanics of writing but about capturing ideas.

Sometimes I find the contrived concision of short stories a bit cryptic, but from the unsettling opening of each story in this #CGSReads emerges a powerful sense of truth made vivid by sparkling dialogue & character. Loved his last novel; found this more challenging but worth it.

A great story - with thanks to Tobi & Sarah for this #CGSReads and for all they’ve brought to #CGSRowing. Also fascinating insight to life and logistics in the immediate aftermath of war.

Catching up on some #CGSReads while a bit crook on this wet weekend. Reading books with the small people in your life makes everything better. Don’t forget to share your reading with your kids. It’s pretty special when they share back with you. This is a beautiful little one.

An uncomfortable yet intimate & generous #CGSReads for all of us who dwell within the cultures of institutions: what it is to be within & yet without; to belong & not; to wonder how much our professed inclusion is only really superficial; & how we may truly make it otherwise.

Another family sharing #CGSReads. In a hectic term, I can’t keep up, let alone devour novel series after novel series in the way that they do, but it’s a huge pleasure seeing their minds brimming with stories - including meta-narrative like this one - & sharing as much as I can.

World Teachers Day, a day to celebrate a great vocation. Challenging, exhausting? Yes. Fulfilling, fun? Absolutely. What do teachers do? Care, teach, learn, think, share, coach, camp, advise, support, nurture, inspire, & give their all to the future of the young. Thank you all.

We’ll said, Angus. I rarely retweet media articles but I couldn’t agree more with this one by an HSC student, even noting the irony of its publication in an organ that’s annual ramp-up coverage & league tables do more to overhype the HSC than anything else smh.com.au/national/nsw/l…

Great to be with Yr6 on camp. A huge culminating adventure for their time in Primary School @CanberraGrammar. Always so fulfilling to see so many so happy and so rightly proud of their achievement. Enormous thanks & admiration to dedicated staff & all involved.

Such a pleasure to experience the @CanberraGrammar Primary School PYP Walk again for the first time in 3 years. Curiosity and creativity bursting from every wall! A huge effort all round and great to enjoy it with so many families.

@JasonClareMP Minister @JasonClareMP, it was a privilege to meet you on Monday. Thank you sincerely for your time & interest. Gough Whitlam was educated at @CanberraGrammar. I can send you my eulogy of 8yrs ago. Would you consider delivering the Annual CGS Gough Whitlam Address in his honour?

8 years ago today we lost a giant in Gough Whitlam. Then and now well may we say Rest In Peace.

What an exceptional privilege for #CGSInsight to host John Bell & the Australian Haydn Ensemble performing at @CanberraGrammar in the Snow Concert Hall today, followed by music & drama masterclasses sharing the insights & experiences of some of Australia’s finest performers.👏🙏

What a first week of term at @CanberraGrammar! In addition to camps from the coast to the mountains, there’s been Yr12 HSC exams, Yr11 IB TOK/Gp4 retreat, Yr11 HSC first classes, Yr 9 challenges, the early learning athletics carnival & all culminating in Primary School walkathon!

@jenny_a_green Thanks for the article. Couldn’t agree more. It’s always all about the individual & the fascinating multi-faceted complexity of identity, character, background, needs and strengths that each brings. Working to that is the challenge - & the great joy & fulfilment - of teaching.

It might be a cold, wet, windy spring school holiday but it’s nice inside sharing #CGSReads on the excited recommendation of a 10yr old. This one’s an intriguing alternate world of lost children living in the rooftops of Paris. Smart, ironic, adventurous and beautifully tender.

I think maybe I need a break from #CGSReads on the state of the world… it feels I’ve read this before, or at least that the definition & self-evidently corrosive effect of contempt in contemporary politics & media didn’t need quite so much explaining. But it’s true & troubling.

Another #CGSReads from a busy term: a clear, powerful & accessible account of the history, complex currents, progress - & profound lack thereof - that bring us to this moment. An important read for all Australians, as we prepare for a historic opportunity to get it right.

Catching up on my Term 3 #CGSReads backlog… This one’s a swift account of world history through the lens of a city for each era. Sometimes more about famously influential inhabitants than the city itself, but raises interesting thoughts about why & where history congregates.
