@social_brains It is also very plausible that there is a great deal motivational diversity among the 75 million people who voted for Trump. I agree that economic issues are often the single biggest motivator for folks and I also believe there are other factors at play here

I think we need to hold two separate thoughts at once. Trump has strong authoritarian tendencies and says racist/sexist things AND at the same time most people voted for him because they think he will make the economy better and secure the border. They don’t need to be racist fascists to vote for him.

Half of Donald Trump's former cabinet members have refused to endorse him. The most senior Republican senator calls him “despicable”. Both his former chief-of-staff and former head of the joint chiefs call him a fascist. We are endorsing Kamala Harris econ.st/4ef9Abf 👇

@social_brains If you're ready to jump right in to designing a full-sized course, go for it, but when I've had a new idea that I wanted to workshop a bit the fiat lux mechanism is great for that.

Academics, I need your help in designing a new course (and please retweet so I get more fdbk). Many of our undergraduates seem unable or unwilling to discuss difficult topics. They seem to lack tools for understanding what counts as evidence and how to reason effectively in these real world contexts. It seems like they often mistake their feelings for reasons and evidence or simply don’t want to have to discuss or defend their views at all. As universities, countering this should be one of our primary missions so that we are producing a citizenry unafraid to engage on these topics and also willing to listen to and learn from those they disagree with. While it is often forgotten, this is the actual benefit of diverse perspectives. So I’m considering creating a course that not only teaches these skills but requires students to put them into practice, rather than just to learn them academically. Have any of you created a course like this or do you have a course like this at your university? If so, would you be able to share your syllabus?

I'm honored and blown away that @UCLA chose THE WAR FOR KINDNESS as their Common Read for 2024. The community there is using the book as a foundation for campus-wide discussions around connection, especially during difficult times. newsroom.ucla.edu/stories/how-th…

🌵Babies are weird about plants🌵 Infants--from as young as 8m--are reluctant to touch PLANTS (vs. objects incl rocks, seashells, kitchen knives) Why? For most of our history, we've been surrounded by plants. Plants' defenses (toxins, thorns) have shaped our minds @AnnieWertz
