@Sgfutch @teachthemx3 That’s the line people give…but I’ve been in it 20 years…no one is putting in 13-14 hour days…they like to complain because it’s the thing to do…but all in all it isn’t nearly as bad

@JBarrettD @teachthemx3 That’s what you think the schedule is. It isn’t. My daughter teaches. She leaves home at 5:45 am and frequently isn’t home until 7 or later because of extracurricular activities she’s involved in. She gets 6 weeks in the summer, not 3 months. It’s not quite as cushy as people say

There are several teachers in my building who are leaving education without a new job offer. Some said they might drive for Uber or DoorDash, and another might apply at Target. They are done with education. Leaving with no plan is better than staying in the dysfunctional environment, in their opinion.

I have a BA in ESL and an MA in Online Education. You can easily cut out 2.5 years of BA classes that aren’t relevant to your major. All my MA classes were directly related to what I was studying so it was more focused. I would do it again because it does make a difference as a teacher.

Most people are coming to the realization that many university degrees are worthless, or at least not worth 4 years of your productive life and not worth $100,000 to $200,000 in debt. Looking back at your degree, was it worth it? Or was it just a good time for a few years? Would you do it again? My degree was a complete waste of money (business school) and I ended up in a career that didn’t require it at all.

@WallStreetMav In my age bracket my initial one was free (scholarship)…but couldn’t get a job (business)…got my MA mostly covered (education) and then paid for an ED.S which was completely worthless…but only way to move up in EDU at the time…nothing useful came out of the 40k piece of paper

@jlpoober Many people who talk about how much they work are just inefficient-your not ‘working’ an extra 20 hours a week-you just can’t complete standard duties in allotted time-that’s on you

@jlpoober I’ll call BS-first of all-teachers get a prep…normally an hour a day-5 days a week…that’s 5 hours…you choose to have kids in your room for lunch-it’s not mandated anywhere You choose to arrive at work ‘early’ normally it’s total of 30 before/after combo (part of contract)

I wrote a post about working 60 hours in one week. The comments were something. Let me address a few things. "Other jobs work long hours too." Yes. I know. I never said otherwise. My point was simple: I earned my time off. That's it. If your job also overworks you without overtime pay, I'm genuinely sorry. That's also wrong. But it doesn't make what I described less true. "You're salaried. No overtime exists." True. Also: a 185-day contract paid over 24 checks isn't a summer salary. It's a school-year salary paid slowly. I'm not being compensated for July. I'm being paid in July for work I did in October. "You chose to work those extra hours." Sure. And if I hadn't, no lessons would be planned, nothing would be graded, and 30 kids would walk into an unprepared classroom on Monday morning. The work doesn't disappear because the clock does. "You hate your job." I don't. I love my students. That has nothing to do with whether the math adds up. The original post wasn't a complaint. It was arithmetic. If the arithmetic bothers you, I'd suggest the problem isn't the math.
Jen@jenteach13

Everyone loves to remind teachers about summer. Fine. Let's do the math. This week I worked nearly 60 hours. 6:30 arrival. Unpaid lunch with kids in my room. Covered PE — I teach Spanish. Graded vocab tests Friday night. Graded a children's book project on Saturday. Turned one into a movie and posted it for the class. Five hours of lesson planning today. The standard work week is 40 hours. The extra 20? Unpaid. Some weeks, the grading is lighter. Some weeks it's worse. This is not the worst week I've had. But yes. I get summers off.

The statistics show it: Invest in a Marriage not in a wedding. The wedding industry is a $60 billion machine built on convincing you that spending more means loving more. The research says something different. Emory University researchers surveyed over 3,000 couples and found that the more you spend on your wedding the more likely you are to end up divorced. The data is consistent enough that it's hard to ignore. Women who spent over $20,000 on their wedding were 3.5 times more likely to divorce than those who kept the budget between $5,000 and $10,000. Couples who spent less than $1,000 on their wedding had the LOWEST divorce rates of all. Now here's the nuance that matters. The researchers don't believe an expensive wedding causes divorce. They believe the financial behaviors and pressures that lead couples to overspend on a wedding create the conditions for marital strain down the road. Financial stress is consistently the number one cause of divorce. Starting a marriage with $30,000 in wedding debt on a combined $80,000 income is a fundamentally different situation than spending $30,000 when you earn $300,000. There's also a finding in this study that almost never gets mentioned in the viral versions of this stat. Couples with large guest lists but modest budgets had some of the strongest marriages of anyone in the study. The researchers believe community support from friends and family matters far more to a marriage than what you spent on centerpieces. The wedding industry spent decades convincing people that the size of the ring and the budget of the reception are expressions of love. The data disagrees 💍 ♥️ Source: The Argent Group
