I’m at my dad’s house. He’s on hospice so not much time left. He’s been flying since 1940 and has a lot of pilot friends. This morning they’re buzzing the house for him. Probably illegal but I don’t give a damn. It’s making him smile.

The true scale of the Slievenamon fire is captured in this powerful photograph by Phil Greaves 📸 As this image shows, the brave men & women battling this wildfire are working in extraordinarily dangerous conditions. It really is a sad, sad sight 😔😔

For any of ye who aren't familiar with the drama I referenced in yesterday's post. I had a few messages saying that I too should give up my anonymity. I'm going to compromise and post a picture here of myself but it'll be random and possibly hidden somewhere in the comments section 😅 I've lost a few follow since this has started even though I have nothing to do with Pub Spy! I actually thought it was discontinued years ago 🤦‍♂️ To those of you who continue to follow the page thanks a million 🍻 More pubs to come including a top Dublin North side list in time for the weekend!

🇺🇸 Lt. Gen. James Longstreet had a son born just over three months after the Battle of Gettysburg. He named him Robert Lee Longstreet. Robert went on to serve as a Major in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWI. He died in 1940 in Mercer County, WV (named after Gen. Hugh Mercer!) He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Barnaby Breaks History 🇺🇸
🇺🇸 George Patton's 3rd great-grandfather, General Hugh Mercer, was killed in the Revolutionary War At the Battle of Princeton, his horse was shot out from under him. He was then surrounded by British redcoats who mistook him for George Washington due to his uniform. They ordered him to surrender. He refused. Mercer drew his sword and attacked the British alone. He was beaten with muskets and bayoneted seven times. He survived his wounds for nine days, being treated by Dr. Benjamin Rush who signed the Declaration of Independence. He passed on January 12, 1777. He was close friends with George Washington.

George Patton’s grandfather, George S. Patton Sr., was also killed in the Civil War. George Sr. is buried in the exact same grave as his brother, Waller. Their shared monument reads: "Here lie asleep in one grave. THE PATTON BROTHERS." As commander of the 22nd Virginia Infantry, he was shot in the leg and mortally wounded on September 19, 1864, at the Third Battle of Winchester.

John Smith reached Virginia in chains, condemned to hang. During the voyage, he clashed repeatedly with the gentlemen leading the expedition because he was a commoner giving them orders. They accused him of plotting mutiny and had him locked below deck. Captain Newport intended to execute him as soon as they landed. But there was a box on board, sealed by the Virginia Company, that could only be opened in Virginia. What they didn’t know was that the box contained the names of the men chosen to govern the colony. When they finally broke the seal, one of the names inside belonged to John Smith. The man they had dragged across the Atlantic to hang was already on the list to help rule them. They had no choice but to release him.
