Alright Noles, here are my 10 takeaways/thoughts on Tate Rodemaker/FSU’s performance vs UF + going into Louisville🍢🍢:
1) Thank God for defense and RB Trey Benson. Both played lights out and That’s all I need to say on point 1.
2) Tate threw for 48%, a lot of that due to the O-line. I said on Double Fries No Slaw podcast that Jordan’s mobility covered up some things that Tate would be more prone to expose and that was true.
3) O-Line needs to step it up. Are they horrible? Absolutely Not! But Tate is not Jordan. He’s not going to go on foot 20+ yards out of the pocket if it’s not wide open. And quite frankly, he doesn’t need to: #1 They can’t afford to lose Tate to injury #2 Tate is a pocket QB. Yes, he can run, but it is not his greatest strength. OL has to give him some time. Scrambling almost every down is going to result in INT, TFL or Fumbles on Saturday.
3.5) with this, it’s up to Tate to improve on making decisions quicker too. He’s played 18 games, but I think the fast pace of Saturdays game is something he had to adjust to. Not worried about that in the future, but for the next game, getting the ball out quick and precise will be huge or Louisville defense is going to be a biggggg problem.
4) FSU’s slow start is largely because of their struggle to get in a rhythm. Not sure if that’s solely due to having a new QB or what, but Communication was a clear issue in the first half. 3-4 Delay of Games just can’t happen in Charlotte.
5)TE Jaheim Bell and WR Johnny Wilson played great. Wilson led all FSU receivers with 6 catches for 64 yards + Bell had 3 for 38. Wonderful, but gotta find a way to get Keon open more on Saturday and Tate’s got to make more consistent/accurate throws. And if we want to be really ticky, TE room could do a bit better with blocking- this wasn’t a major issue though.
6) FSU fought poor field possession and few offensive opportunities over most of the first half where the Noles managed just 3 offensive plays the entire 1st quarter. Again, can’t happen in Charlotte.
7) Noles were 4 of 14 on 3rd down conversions. Converting for maybe 40% over 28% is just one small thing that could make a big difference vs Louisville (in my opinion)
8) Max Brown played like I expected him to, made some big completions that impressed me. UF defense honestly dominated FSU through midway of the 2nd quarter. Honestly, the entire game was messy, but FSU did what they do best and eventually took control of the game in the second half.
9) Nobody ever talks about kickers, but I think multiple games across college football this weekend showed how BIG having a reliable kicker is. Ryan Fitzgerald was perfect against UF in FG and PATs. He is 100% in PATs this season (57-57) and has only missed ONE field goal (15-16). He is an NFL caliber kicker and deserves recognition. Small points like this can end up making a big difference!!
10) Overall, this clearly wasn’t Florida States best performance and I think the team knows that. With Tate’s first start being in the Swamp, I think he did good. I think he was unorganized mentally at first considering the the rivalry, environment and nerves, but once he settled in, we got a glimpse into who he is as a quarterback. Was it his best performance? No, but I don’t think he should be disappointed and I don’t think fans should be asking for Brock Glenn lol. Kid was thrown into the fire in an unimaginable situation and I think he handled his business. Coming back from 12-0 deficit and winning by 9 in a huge rivalry game was big. Noles just need to clean up a bit in some areas for the ACC championship game!!
Bonus takeaway: Those who are upset about 2x2 piece of sod need to toughen up! 🤣
