JCRC-NY was proud to bring together 15 Jewish organizations to write a letter in solidarity with the Muslim community following the deadly attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego this week. May the memory of those lost be a blessing. 💔 Read the letter here: jcrcny.org/news-post/jcrc…

JCRC-NY and UJA-Federation of New York were proud to attend an interfaith vigil alongside Jewish communal leaders, faith leaders, and partners from across New York mourning the victims of the horrific attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Every American must be able to pray, learn, and gather in community without fear. Attacks on houses of worship and schools are attacks on the foundations of religious freedom and human dignity in this country. As a Jewish community that has experienced hatred and violence directed at our own sacred spaces, we stand in shared grief and solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters, and in unwavering opposition to religious hatred and intolerance in all its forms.

The horrific attack targeting the Islamic Center in San Diego is an attack not only on the Muslim community, but on the very values of safety and religious freedom that define America. No one should ever have to calculate risk when entering or leaving their house of worship. No one. As hatred and extremism continue to rise across our country, we must stand united in unequivocally condemning this vile act of violence and recommit ourselves to protecting every community from fear and hate. Grateful for the brave response of law enforcement and my prayers are with the worshippers, our Muslim neighbors, and all lives impacted by this chilling act of violence. Hate against any community is a threat to every community.

The two suspects in a Monday shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego are dead, according to a police source. The Islamic Center is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to its website. Aerial TV footage showed more than a dozen children holding hands and being walked out of the parking lot of the center that is surrounded by scores of police vehicles.

New York is home to the largest Jewish community outside of Israel. For the overwhelming majority of Jewish New Yorkers, the connection to Israel is not political or social media theater. It is ancestral, spiritual, historic, and deeply personal. At a moment of rising antisemitism, including a terror threat against a NYC synagogue and hateful protests targeting Jewish families in Brooklyn, public rhetoric matters, especially heading into the Sabbath as many Jewish New Yorkers already feel vulnerable and unsettled. We can uphold the humanity of all people while also recognizing that Jewish identity and the deep connection many Jews feel to Israel deserve the same respect afforded to every other community. Referencing this chapter of history without acknowledging the full history, including the post-World War II U.N. partition plan supporting two states for two peoples, which Jews accepted, does nothing to advance understanding. New Yorkers should expect leadership that lowers the temperature, brings people together, and makes every community feel seen, respected, and safe, including Jewish New Yorkers.

Today marks Nakba Day, an annual day of remembrance to commemorate the expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians between 1947 and 1949 during the creation of the State of Israel and the year that followed. Inea is a New Yorker and a Nakba survivor. She shared her story with us — one of home, tradition and memory over generations.

Beautiful day in Bensonhurst for the 3rd Annual Shalom Dragon Family Festival celebrating both Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month…a huge @JCRCNY priority! Huge thanks to the incredible team at Marks JCH of Bensonhurst, Council Member Susan Zhuang and her office, UJA-Federation of NY, the amazing JCRC-NY team, Speaker Julie Menin, NYPD, CSI, and all our community partners for bringing neighbors together through culture, music, and friendship. At a time when too many try to divide communities through fear and hate, Brooklyn sent a different message today: our communities belong here, contribute here, and should be celebrated here. And in true Brooklyn fashion, dumplings and babka diplomacy remain undefeated.

Governor Hochul just celebrated JCRC-NY’s 50th anniversary with our community and is looking forward to marching once again down Fifth Avenue. We’re also grateful to Commissioner Jessica Tisch and the extraordinary men and women of the NYPD, the finest police department in the world, who will help ensure another safe celebration of Jewish pride, identity, and connection to Israel. As the CEO of the organization that runs the Israel Day on Fifth parade, I firmly stand by my sources.

From JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger: Last night, protesters marched through the Midwood section of Brooklyn - a heavily Jewish neighborhood - chanting eliminationist slogans such as, "there is only one solution, intifada revolution." They went well beyond the stated purpose of their protest outside a local synagogue, spilling across residential streets where families were sitting down to dinner. This is not peaceful advocacy. This is the organized harassment and intimidation of Jews. Period. No international conflict will ever be resolved at the doors of a synagogue or through the intimidation of Jewish families in the streets of a neighborhood home to Holocaust survivors, refugees from persecution, and generations of New Yorkers who simply wish to raise their families in peace and safety. No Jewish family in Midwood - nor any family for that matter - should ever have to bear the brunt of hate, harassment, or intimidation over disputes taking place thousands of miles away, regardless of the circumstances... We thank Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the NYPD, and the Community Security Initiative - a joint security program supported by JCRC-NY and UJA-Federation of New York - for working under extraordinarily difficult circumstances to protect public safety and constitutional rights. These disturbing incidents further reinforce the importance of clear and transparent safe-access policies championed by leaders such as Governor Kathy Hochul and Speaker Julie Menin so that no New Yorker ever has to calculate personal risk before entering or leaving a house of worship. JCRC-NY mourns the passing of legendary former Anti-Defamation League leader Abraham Foxman, a towering voice against antisemitism, hate, and bigotry in all forms. For decades, Abe stood shoulder to shoulder with organizations like JCRC-NY in advancing the safety, dignity, and democratic rights of the Jewish community while building bridges across communities and faiths. His moral clarity, courage, and lifelong commitment to justice helped shape generations of Jewish communal leadership. May his memory forever be a blessing.

All of us must push back against all forms of hate, including antisemitism. Everyone should have the right to be who they are, worship who they worship and walk freely. There are some who wish to make it so America can hate again, freely—we must form a united front against that.
