@JCrop02 @ScottyBeeIsMe @swissfootdata No, they didn’t. I see this said a lot. Who has said it? They use slow motion to show point of contact; full speed to judge intensity. Even if they got it wrong, they get it wrong all the time. It happens - suck it up.

Belgium, you need to save football Just refuse to play FIFA will lose millions of dollars. Broadcaster and sponsors will be furious And that is all that counts to them
Ben Jacobs@JacobsBen

🚨 BREAKING: RBFA say they are "astonished" Flo Balogun can play against them and "investigating all potential options". "The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time). "FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction. "However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup. "Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5: "If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed." "The automatic nature of such a suspension was also explicitly reaffirmed in FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was distributed to all participating member associations on 12 May 2026. "The same rule is reiterated at every FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Coordination Meeting prior to each match and is included in all FIFA World Cup 2026 workshop presentations. "In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options."

@adamntg2 @ScottyBeeIsMe @swissfootdata They misused VAR from the outset. They broke protocol in doing so. That is the difference. That had never happened in the history of the World Cup before. This decision, though messy, corrects an official’s misuse of VAR.

@JCrop02 @ScottyBeeIsMe @swissfootdata Nonsense. A red card is a red card, for right or wrong. The difference is that Trump didn’t ask for the suspension to be waived. Political interference usually gets a country suspended from FIFA.

@JCrop02 @ScottyBeeIsMe @swissfootdata There is no argument for lifting the suspension. England had a player sent off last night. Do they get their Prime Minister to phone and get the suspension annulled now?

@danielheap13 @billg @DiceElDani @grok But if you’re referring to the Premier League, could be any number of reasons. Maybe those teams aren’t aware of the option the US used by citing article 27? Maybe they just always accepted rulings cuz of status quo? Or maybe it’s cuz it’s long established precedent in the PL?

This take shows a complete lack of understanding of the issue. Belgium isn’t upset because the US is at full strength. They’re upset because FIFA made a call, then decided the call didn’t matter. This isn’t about competitive advantage. It’s about the integrity of the rules.
Wade Plemons@WadePlem

What exactly is Belgium upset about?? That they don’t get a competitive advantage to play a USA team missing one of their best players? Imagine being angry you have to play a team at full strength 😭

@danielheap13 @billg @DiceElDani @grok Premier League is an annual league. World Cup is a tournament held once every four years. I already acknowledged they were under the same rules. But the premier league is a separate entity. Just because they willfully ignore protocol, doesn’t mean one World Cup official can.

@JCrop02 @billg @DiceElDani @grok Premier league is FIFA World Cup is FIFA FIFA is the governing body. So they are technically under the same rules just different teams.

@StamfordScoop @burner_mcburney @breezy13218 @jltho Again, to even come to that conclusion he first misused VAR. That triggered Article 27, making it feasible to suspend the red card. Had he made the decision without the use of VAR, this would have been a non-issue because there would have been no course of action for the U.S.

To all the Europeans clutching their pearls over this after spending the last several days Eurosplaining the sport to us, let me explain it to you. Even if Balogun deserved a red (he didn’t), the referee misused VAR under FIFA’s own rules. That resulted in a red card that couldn’t be appealed. FIFA then correctly used Article 27 to review and suspend the ban because the initial VAR error led to an unappealable decision.
Alfie | HITC Sevens@HITCSevens

This makes a mockery of the whole tournament. If the USMNT win, Belgium will have every right to feel cheated, meanwhile the USA’s victory - by their best ever generation of players - will forever be tainted by accusations of favouritism and corruption. It’s bad for everyone.

@danielheap13 @billg @DiceElDani @grok Premier league is different from a World Cup. It’s never happened in the World Cup. Just because PL officials willfully ignore this statute doesn’t make it ok for WC officials to do so. Premier League is their own entity.

@JCrop02 @billg @DiceElDani @grok Except that has been done before. Countless times. In the premier league. What’s never been done before is rescinding a red before the automatic 1 game suspension.

@burner_mcburney @JCrop02 @breezy13218 @jltho The FIRST game in a suspension is automatic, that's the rule, ronaldo served the FIRST game suspension. And its not even the issue, fifa have never overturned a suspension mid tournament before. Guaranteed if it was Belgium instead it would never have happened, thats the issue

@danielheap13 @billg @DiceElDani @grok I already addressed that wording: Should. Shall. Must. Doesn’t make a difference. The official already broke their own protocols by using slowed down footage with VAR to issue a red that wasn’t already given. That’s never been done before. Article 27 exists for a reason.

@JCrop02 @billg @DiceElDani @grok Show me where in my excerpt then. Because as I told you it says SHOULD. FIFA corrected it because Donald trump called his friend Gianni infantino.

@JCrop02 @burner_mcburney @breezy13218 @jltho There have been 189 red cards in a world cup. Its the first time its ever happened during a tournament, there have been many red cards that were clearly not reds and fifa didnt ever intervene in those. The issue is with fifa

@JCrop02 @billg @DiceElDani @grok Then post it. I have googled it. It showed me that excerpt from the IFAB rule book. So that is why I asked you to show me where it says something different.

@StamfordScoop @burner_mcburney @breezy13218 @jltho Personally I think the biggest issue is the inconsistency in their officiating and what constitutes a foul and what doesn’t. Messi had something that looked far worse than Balogen, but not even a foul call cause Messi is a legend. Same rules should apply to all players/teams.

@JackDunc1 FIFA is righting their own wrong in the first place. The only issue I have with it is the timing. If this was going to happens city should have happened 3-4 days ago.

Let's be really clear here, Belgium are not fussed about the player himself - they are fussed about the corruption and precedent set. They are willing to take a stand for the integrity of the sport, and that should be respected. FIFA and the US should not get away with this.
Daniel Storey@danielstorey85

Belgian FA to consider their options regarding the decision to scratch Balogun's suspension. And rightly so. Our expectations were low and fair play, FIFA have gone under them with ease.
