I worked in medical research. Research for a drug is very strict and can take at least a decade. If drugs are being tested to use ultimately in humans it HAS to be first tested on lower mammals like mice. Not being able to test on vertebrates will never tell us if it is safe and effective. We would have to jump immediately into human trials-volunteers. Without even THIS we would end-up with “Covid Vaccine” events. We citizens WERE the guinea pigs! If you don’t want to be an unwilling guinea pig then how will we get enough volunteers for viable safety research???

The 6th #BrainStimConf is officially underway! Mark George and Harold Sackeim kicked things off with opening remarks, followed by insightful plenary talks from @marombikson and @cjstagg. Exciting to see papers from both of my PIs—including my own—among the top downloads of 2024! 🔥 @brainstimj @RobertC21093233

@benjamin_kop @drcarysevans One thing though. The 4nchannel is a lot thicker than the 2 channel. So this will increase the tms to scalp distance. In addition the 4 channel is much more focused than the 2 channel. So it may be that the 4 channel is simply not engaging enough neurons. Just an idea.

@JFNankoo @drcarysevans Of course, it remains possible that the originally reported effects are valid! If future work included double blinding and validated TMS neuronavigation, that would go a long way in demonstrating how robust these effects are when using the same equipment!

Effects of 5Hz-rTUS (tbTUS) on corticospinal excitability are less robust than we initially thought. Check out my new preprint with @drcarysevans and Po-Yu Fong showing that offline excitatory TUS-TMS effects don't replicate. Thread below 👇 doi.org/10.1101/2024.1…

@benjamin_kop @drcarysevans Interesting. I wonder why there are studies replicating it? If it is a bias then we have to consider a systematic bias in multiple labs. FYI - I have no personal attachment to any protocols - I am just curious.

@JFNankoo @drcarysevans It’s unlikely to be a difference in equipment for a couple reasons! For one, our acoustic profile in the brain was very similar. Second, I piloted the study at Donders using a 2-element transducer and also didn’t see any evidence of excitation there.

@JFNankoo @drcarysevans We ran the study double-blinded only, so with the information we have the discrepancy in results is likely due to double blinding and/or TMS neuronavigation! Even if single blinding like Zeng, neuronavigation would eg still have removed possible unconscious bias in TMS placement

Day two of #FUN24 kicked off with an outstanding presentation by Emilie Franceschini from Aix-Marseille University @univAMU_Europe @LMA_UMR7031. She discussed how some of the dorsal root ganglion neurons are genetically more responsive to focused ultrasound stimulation and the critical role of deformation in FUS response. The session was moderated by Miriam Klein-Flugge @MKFlugge.
