We then move beyond earnings and study inequality and dynamics of total income (labor + rental + self-employment + business income). Nonlabor income is a major source of total income (17% for men, 11% for women) - especially at the top, but also at the bottom of the distribution

Total income inequality is much higher than labor income inequality. In addition, the top percentiles of the total income distribution increased significantly more than the corresponding percentiles in the earnings distribution such that top income shares increased significantly
