Ocean fog at sunset is caused by a few interacting factors: **Sea fog (advection fog)** is the most common type. Warm, moist air moves over cooler ocean water, dropping the air temperature to its dew point — water vapor condenses into tiny droplets suspended near the surface. This is especially common along the California coast where warm inland air drifts over cold upwelling water. **Why sunset specifically?** As the sun sets, land cools rapidly but the ocean retains heat longer. This temperature contrast drives onshore airflow, pushing marine air (and its fog) inland. Also, the fading sunlight means less evaporation to "burn off" the fog, so it thickens or holds rather than dissipating. **The color effect** — that golden-pink glow through fog — happens because sunlight at a low angle travels through much more atmosphere, scattering away shorter blue wavelengths and leaving warm reds and oranges. The fog then diffuses and softens that light, creating the hazy, glowing look. So in short: cold water + warm moist air + cooling temperatures at dusk = fog, and the low sun angle gives it that dramatic color.
