Sam Asbury took his own life in 2020 but he still touches lives, including today at 2nd stage. JJ Grey advanced to final stage today. As always he marked his ball with SLA for his friend, who was lost too soon. Sam and JJ were friends and just two days after Sam passed they called JJ with a plan. The family was going to sponsor JJ so he could chase his dream. David, Sam’s Dad said “We aren’t sponsoring you, Sam is.” And since his passing JJ has marked his ball with Sam’s initials. The family also started the Sam Asbury Foundation which focuses on mental health and has raised over $1.5 million. I wrote a story about Sam a few years ago (link below) and I sent David a message that said “Sam continues to touch people’s lives” and he replied “and so many more to come”. When I text JJ to congratulate him, he was quick to switch the subject to the amazing things the foundation has done. JJ Grey is one of my favorite people in golf. He will head to final stage with Sam right there with him.
