while you're navigating your way around the roads today, remember Gladys West, who did early research that contributed to the creation of the GPS systems we all rely on today. She recently passed away at age 95. She walked 3 miles to a segregated school as a youth, held odd jobs to earn advanced math degrees, found work with the Navy, calculated missile ranges and the orbits of planets, and then did pioneering work on the geodetic models of Earth needed to make GPS a reality. She continued on to obtain still more advanced degrees and, after retirement, took up karate and piano! Luckily her contributions were later revealed to the public and she won multi recognitions and was inducted into the Space & Missle Pioneers Hall of Fame.
