@dustdevil313 @argent_631 It’s absolutely a thing that can only work among men, tapping into specifically male modes of competitiveness and status jockeying. That speech won’t work with women

@dustdevil313 @argent_631 The funniest thing about all those people online fantasizing about what they’d say back to him in such a situation is that his whole spiel is a “work”, a kayfabe to shake the salesforce up. I mean, who carries around a pair of brass balls in his briefcase otherwise?:)

@JLevendia Grant and Farthing are effects, not causes, of something deeper and more pervasive.

Canada is thoroughly Americanized already: the America they hate is just Red State America. In this way Canada is merely an extension of the Blue States. Even our anti-Americanism is the branch plant of an American parent.
J.J. McCullough@JJ_McCullough

This is a shockingly virulent screed against the United States, published in Canada’s self-proclaimed leading national newspaper, written by two elite academics. Unhinged anti-Americanism is a seriously toxic, destructive force in Canada that needs to face more resistance.

@lilchiva I’ve real trouble disliking him, just because of stuff like this. If nothing else, he has cojones.

@rustyoldwheel Awesome. It’s an American import wearing that old Loyalist skinsuit now. You know this. Or do you truly believe the Florida and Arizona condo owning class are fired by the ideals of George Grant or John Farthing?

@JLevendia No, anti-Americanism has been an essential part of Canadian politics and identity since the Loyalists came north.

Map of the Confederacy, had they won. This is the South by right and by blood and it should all be reclaimed 💪

@RedCrow1534 Not enthusiastically Americanizing over the last half-century (mostly under cover of “not being American”) would’ve helped a lot in keeping our distance. Right now, the hour seems very late.

@Cappadocian17 Just so. Quebeckers _are_ a nation: no bones about it. English Canada is an American regional culture under another flag.

@JLevendia It was doomed in my opinion. The largest undefeated border with the world’s premier power and the full force of exported culture and entertainment. Even without that there’s more in common with them than there is between Poles and Russians or Ukrainians and Russians.

One of the “elite academics”who wrote this Toronto op-ed is an imported American professor: Jason Stanley, formerly the Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. Is anti-American hate propaganda something they can’t find a qualified Canadian to do?

@JMF1958 One reads about ‘sardonic laughter’ in novels; when you finally do it often in real life it’s not fun.

@Cappadocian17 Sad that even the Canadian nationalism I knew was already adulterated into its Pearsonian form: I only knew the older Tory tradition from its last dying scraps in the culture and from books by George Grant. After a certain point a thing finally dies when people keep killing it.

@JLevendia More Canadians become American every year and that’s WITH current constraints. All trump has to do to gut this place is declare a North American ‘Schengen’ zone.
