Well, there we are. Everything in the universe is purged of complex life except the Sol system. The stars will wink out for a bit over the next few centuries because we unmade everything until we could figure out what to do about the collective virus. Try not to freak out.

Intelligent aliens may be deliberately avoiding us Imagine a civilization millions of years older than humanity. To them, we are not “potential partners”. We are a developmental phase. Like watching: - a child who just discovered matches - a chimp that learned to throw stones - a species that figured out nuclear weapons before emotional maturity No one sees that and thinks: “Excellent. Let’s introduce ourselves and share advanced technology” To an advanced civilization, broadcasting signals is reckless behavior. We beam radio waves into space like we’re yelling: “Hello universe, we exist, please notice us.” To an older intelligence: - Broadcasting = revealing location - Revealing location = unnecessary risk - Unnecessary risk = a sign of an immature species It’s the cosmic equivalent of shouting your ATM PIN in public and hoping only polite listeners are nearby. Earth might simply be an open laboratory No evil aliens required. Just patient ones. From the outside, Earth could look like: - a self organizing ecosystem - a long running evolutionary experiment - a sandbox with far too many red buttons Intervening too early ruins the data. So they observe. They record. They do not touch. Humans: a beta version running hot From their perspective: Our technology grows exponentially Our ethics grow… linearly at best Our power has already outrun our restraint We are a species that learned fire and immediately asked whether it could ignite stars. Conversation at this stage wouldn’t be diplomacy. It would be contamination. Why the silence? Not because they don’t exist. Not because they despise us. But because of a rule that feels universally adult: Do not enter the monkey enclosure and teach the monkeys how to build guns. Silence here is not indifference. It is politeness at a cosmic scale. Is that silence frightening or comforting? If intelligent aliens avoid us, it suggests: - the universe has unwritten rules - intelligence tends to come with restraint - not every powerful civilization feels the need to announce itself The unsettling thought isn’t that no one is answering. It’s that if one day they do, it may be because we’ve finally become safe to talk to. Or dangerous enough that ignoring us is no longer an option 👽🛸
