Alright, controversial take: This latest Joji album has been somewhat of a flop.
I'm not saying the album was bad (I like it a lot, as I've said many times). I'm also not saying didn't have a lot of hype for it (it was the 7th most pre-saved album on Spotify of all time)
But it hasn't had anywhere near the cultural impact of Ballads 1 and Nectar, or even Smithereens for that matter (purely because of Glimpse of Us, though).
Slow Dancing In The Dark, Sanctuary, and Glimpse of Us are all iconic songs. The most popular song on on PITW, Pixelated Kisses, has had nowhere near the impact of these songs.
Other than Pixelated Kisses, the second most popular song (Love You Less) has the same number of listens on Spotify as the least popular song on Smithereens.
I also think the doppelganger thing was a huge mistake that backfired spectacularly. It was meant to be funny, but once people realised they weren't going to see Joji at all (whose image is a big part of his career), they sort of tuned out.
Joji has only performed once since the album released, and only a single song, but it wasn't even a song off of the album.
I personally believe this is the reason that Filthy Frank was mentioned in the promo reel for the tour; purely because there wasn't enough passion about the album itself to create interest in the tour.
I'm probably gonna catch some heat for this lmao, but I'm interested to hear what others think.
