Hands down one of the greatest hip-hop albums of my generation and just an absolute clinic in project making. It was so intentional and powerful that it’s a truly unforgettable classic for me. My full on definition of a true poet of the streets. An amazing body of work that endeared an amazing artist to me.

21 years ago today, Common released 'Be' 💿 The album was primarily produced by Ye, with additional production from J Dilla. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 with 185,000 first-week units and earned four Grammy nominations. Favorite tracks on the album?

@OGxTP I think the first time I ever played this was in the waiting room at a doctors office which I know to Gen X probably makes zero sense 😂 Damn 🥹

Hey @BootsRiley can I get a part as weird sneaker enthusiast? Let’s do sneaker culture next, there’s plenty of things to address. I Love Boosters Too.

Get Weird. It’s what @joefreshgoods said about his @newbalance 1890. From a distance what’s weirder than a 47 year old setting up a tripod with mismatch shoes, a loud colored sherpa jacket with matching shorts? I’m dressed for 2 different climates 😂 Then it makes sense #KOTD

@NerdAtCoolTable I haven’t finished the album yet, but I’m not going. I will give room or space for the argument that ‘maid of honour’ is better or more suited for women and their experience. But that’s all, respectfully.

I really appreciate the expression here because even though I do not believe @DJHed in this scenario I truly appreciate him expressing the caveat of this not being what normal people would think and or feel and separating himself from that. Thanks to @GinaViews in that moment, saying the proper thing to keep him honest & the point still being on the art & artists license to express. Conversations about music are awesome but once they leave the artist and the artists intention it’s no longer legitimately ‘of that’ anymore. It’s become something that has derived from it, for better or for worse.

🚨 DJ Hed says one thing he can’t fully relate to on ICEMAN is Drake feeling betrayed by people choosing sides… DJ Hed says personally he wouldn’t take it that deeply if people around him did things with someone criticizing him but admits the average person would probably feel hurt, betrayed & take it personally the conversation ends with them saying that’s exactly why judging Drake’s reaction doesn’t really matter “His art comes from how HE felt.” (via Effective Immediately w/ Gina Views)
CY Chels@SeewhyChels

🚨 Gina Views says people criticizing Drake for “victimizing himself” on ICEMAN are missing the point… she argues venting, flexing, talking about women & processing situations has literally been Drake’s formula his entire career Gina says people spent years calling Drake emotional, whiny & a crybaby… so acting shocked that he made albums unpacking everything that happened makes no sense she also says the 3 project approach felt intentional giving rap fans, R&B fans & the international crowd their own version of Drake “This is old Drake… he just gave everybody their own album.” (via Effective Immediately w/ DJ Hed)

I really commend @GinaViews on this expression because it’s 100% sensible & well formulated. Opinions aren’t made to serve everyone and nor is the art. Critiques can be in good faith and then there’s a lot of critiques or criticisms coming from institutions or people that are compromised in ways that go beyond the perspective of someone just looking at or thinking about the art. Someone not liking the way a fish swims doesn’t make the fish wrong. And it’s nothing you can logically express that would make the fish the problem in that circumstance.

I feel like a lot of this is caused by way of people, not respecting art….no, actually…. It’s more so people not respecting music as an artistic format. It’s been commoditized to a point that people think it’s supposed to be something specific that intentionally serves them. but honestly, that’s a whole ‘nother story/conversation….

I find it funny that the critiques for Drake will be ‘dig deep’ or ‘dig deeper’, but when I mention things like his friend, Nadia passing away and how it affected him and bothered him deeply… They have no idea what I’m talking about.
