In my opinion one of the great, but almost unknown science fiction series is Jack Vance's "Demon Princes". It's 5 books long. The hero, Kirth Gerson, is driven b y revenge on 5 pirate lords who combined to devastate his home. Each book focuses how he takes on a different pirate lord. The pirate lords themselves are fascinating as well, though deserving of their retribution. The books aren't overlong - only a few hundred pages, and feature amazing worlds and cultures.

There was a period of several decades in the mid 15th century when the Flemish bookmakers produced books with the vellum dyed black, which could only be inscribed with gold or silver ink. This one is called "The Black Hours", from the Morgan Library in New York.
