What’s interesting, and understandable given the attention economy we live in, is that most people have only seen clipped encounters of Dalton Eatherly portraying him as some kind of villain. A man who randomly harasses Black people by indiscriminately shouting racial slurs. That’s also largely the narrative pushed by both the courts and much of the mainstream media covering his case. In reality, the overwhelming majority of his streams consist of normal or even wholesome interactions with Black Americans who either enjoy the humor, engage with him willingly, or at minimum respect his right to say a taboo word they may personally disagree with. It’ll be interesting to see what footage the prosecution chooses to present during trial. My prediction is that the jury will mostly be shown short, highly clipped confrontations, moments where Dalton is macing people rushing toward him while saying slurs, rather than the broader context of his content as a whole.
