When it comes to the postseason, regular season records don’t matter; it’s all about who shows up when it counts. Right now, Western Illinois is (2-0) in March, and a big reason why is Raegan McCowan. Today, she led the way with 25 points, including the clutch go-ahead jumper with 15 seconds left to help the Leathernecks beat Eastern Illinois. Now, they’re just one win away from playing in the OVC Championship. We’ve talked all season about how special McCowan has been. She’s part of a talented sophomore class full of high scorers, and her performances continue to stand out. Yesterday, she dropped 27 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and handed out 3 assists. She followed that up today with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. That puts her tournament average at (26.0) points, (7.0) rebounds, and (3.0) assists per game — numbers that shouldn’t surprise anyone since she’s currently 10th in the country in scoring. Western Illinois is now (7-2) this season when McCowan scores at least 25 points. When she’s rolling, this team is tough to slow down. But McCowan isn’t doing it alone. She’s gotten great help from her teammates Mia Nicastro, Addi Brownfield, and Mallory McDermott — all three are averaging double figures over the last two games. Next up, Western Illinois faces Lindenwood in the semifinals. These teams split their regular season matchups, so this one should be fun. And with McCowan being the best player on the floor, expect her to do everything she can to help the Leathernecks pick up their third straight win.
