Carleton journalism students record today's Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice winter colloquium event: Enemies of the State: How spying on Indigenous activists became a priority at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, with Brent Forester and Ellen Gabriel.

"When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail," CBC Indigenous reporter Brett Forester says, describing how spying on Indigenous activists became a priority at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and earlier the RCMP.

Reviewing more than 1,000 pages of declassified documents, Forester found surveillance that began in Labrador in 1988 with Cold War paranoia about Soviet meddling had by 1998 evolved into a national counterterrorism project monitoring Indigenous dissent as "domestic extremism."

Brett Forester of CBC Indigenous set out to discover how much time & effort Canada spent spying on Indigenous activists. After 5 years, multiple access to information requests, complaints to the information commissioner and one court challenge, @brettForester found the answer.
