In our meeting during my hiring process in 2003, Katherine encouraged me to turn my interest in the role of media during the Rwanda Genocide into a major project. With her support, the Rwanda Initiative was created, a five-year program to foster journalism education in Rwanda.

Honoured to attend today's emotional memorial service for Katherine Graham, the legendary public policy scholar and former Dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs at Carleton. She hired me in 2003. One friend called her "a mentor, a steady presence and a cheerleader, all at once."
