@notgaetti I grew up watching TG. Great player and better human. But in no way is he a top even 20 hitter of all time. Honest question. Would you rather have him with is .338 average, .383 OBP and 135 or so career HRs or a guy who hit just over .300, had over a .400 obp and 400+ HRs ?

Tony Gwynn is perhaps the greatest pure batsman of all time; cerebral and talented with unmatched bat-to-ball skills and the ability to do damage in any count. He might have been the first player since Ted Williams to bat .400 for a season, had the 1994 campaign been completed.
MLB@MLB

DYK: Tony Gwynn batted .300 or higher in every season but his rookie year — giving him a record NINETEEN straight seasons at .300 or above from 1983-2001! #BlackHistoryMonth

@TroyPSilva Nobody on this list was a gamechanger like Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly were in the 80s. They had relatively short primes of around 7 yrs but were considered the best in baseball during some of those times. We really need to stop comparing 80s numbers to late 90s 2000s.

@JackBrasfield1 @notgaetti So is the object of the game to not strike out or to get on base and drive in runs? TG may be the best contact hitter of all time but he’s probably not in the top 50-100 batters of all time

@notgaetti How about Cy Young Awards for each?! The least amount for the other 4 in pic is 3, by Pedro. Maddux 4 Randy 5 Clemens 7 And Ryan…(drumroll)…ZERO! And his career walks lead on 2nd place(962) is even greater than his lead in career K’s(839) So yeah, I’ll take the other 4!

@CounterptSports @CBsBReference @grok Not really. MS has three really good ncaa baseball programs to draft from plus the high school baseball is legit. As a junior last year, my son saw 95 plus mph three different times at the plate and it seems like every team has at least one 90 mph arm

@nut_history He had a lifetime 3.19 era even with all those walks…….over 27 freaking years. Nobody and I mean nobody could ever stay that dominate for that long. Sure there are guys that were better for short stints but something has to be said for his amazing longevity.

@QuantCapper @Hose906 @nut_history 4 silver sluggers, B2B MVPs, second in MLB in HRs and RBIs in the 80s. Led the 80s in total bases. Throw in 5 GGs too. There are many in the hall without any of those. The 80s were a dead ball era. Don’t compare their numbers to the 90s and 2000s

@PaulAbbottII @nut_history How about 3.19 over his career of……..27 yrs! Is that impressive. What that era stat in his quality start loses shows is his lack of run support. If he wins half of those think of his win total

@nut_history This is not impressive. Of course his ERA was good in games that he pitched well. What was his ERA in non quality starts that he won? What was his ERA in the 185 losses that were not quality starts?
