It’s quite simple. Many egg producers have been paid well below the cost of production this year. When their flock comes to the end of lay, they’re choosing not to restock. This fiasco was completely avoidable and should shame many of the retailers.

This, 100%. Food is all trade-offs, all the time, and the idea that you can get more food, less environmental impact, better animal welfare, and living wages ALL AT THE SAME TIME is magical thinking. The trade-offs are the hard questions.
