12 hour trip to Shimla in Himalayas, arriving in time for stunning sunset. Shimla was summer capital of Raj & now regional capital. Good people watching day (skilled porters, mad driving). Looking forward to exploring tomorrow & riding WHS Toy Train on Monday!

@HBW_LeedsCastle If you are interested in block printing textiles & can get someone to take you (& I don’t underestimate the challenge - I had to get a tour guide to drop me off) then a visit to the Anokhi museum (just below Amber Fort) is a must!

In Jaipur, (Pink City), stunning gates to city & buildings. Visited stunning 16th C Amber Fort. Also saw rhesus macaque monkeys, black winged stilt, cows & goats. Onto Rajasthani hand weaving site, then street market. onto local street market. More Jaipur tomorrow then Agra.

@HBW_LeedsCastle It’s such a treat….took me a while to realise that the ‘auntie’ to whom they referred to was me! Love meeting these groups & young families too at all major tourist spots 💕

12 hours travel Varanasi-Jaipur today, so limited news. Except…I have become Chief Selfie Partner for Indian School Groups 😎 & today, going onto toll road, traffic had to stop while group of cows ambled through toll point. I don’t believe they were charged for road access.

@SamDalrymple123 Passing through Burhanpur last autumn we met this lovely guy & his wife at the hotel they run. He is I think involved in local conservation & told us stories about the local sites. Sadly we didn’t have time to explore but then we can always return….

The Melon Palace In a small corner of Burhanpur, near the city's municipal rubbish dump, stands a rather gorgeous tomb known as the Kharbuja Mahal, or Melon Palace. In actual fact it's not a Palace at all, but rather the Tomb Bilqis Bano Begum, the wife of Price Shah Shuja.

@SamDalrymple123 Thank you. We saw the fort on our road journey last autumn. It has been most interesting to learn more as I could find only a little about it online! Makes me want to return but as the walk into the Ajanta caves nearly finished me off I suspect the walk up would be a challenge!

The Sultans of Sanskrit Asirgarh is renowned as one of the most ancient and impregnable forts in India, and even to climb up to the citadel from the village below takes a fair bit of puff.

In this week's substack - perhaps my favourite that I've written so far - I aim to show how the view is when we consider Ellora and Khuldabad as a single sacred city, and not just as a stream of separate monuments. Link Below open.substack.com/pub/travelsofs…

@GroomB @UncleJoesSweets Happy recollection - passing these through a window to my late father as he was studying for his radiology qualification late 1950s. (I was very young!😉💕) I now have a bowl sitting on a side table in memory🥰…not sure I like the individual wrapping though!
