Shout out to Paul Stewart, the former footballer who was presented with the Sir Bobby Charlton Award at Wembley last Thursday at the England v Serbia match for his services to child safeguarding. Spurs legend, Paul Stewart, 61, has worked to protect young sports stars from abuse up and down the country for the past decade and was contacted by countless victims of abuse after he bravely revealed his own torment back in 2016. Paul now dedicates his life to promoting and teaching safeguarding, and in receiving the Charlton Award, has been recognised as an inspiration to everyone in his drive to make sure that everyone can enjoy playing football in a safe and welcoming environment. Paul said: "I was lucky enough to win England caps, score in an FA Cup final and pick up a Golden Boot award, but I think that my safeguarding work will be my legacy; this recognition means more to me than all of the accolades during my playing career." Paul, who also received his England Cap as the 1033rd player to represent his country on the pitch at half time, started his career out at Blackpool and played for Manchester City, Spurs, Liverpool Crystal Palace and Sunderland before finishing his distinguished playing career at non-league side Workington, scoring 15 goals in 55 games over two years, and helping them win promotion from the North West Counties League in his first season. Paul also remains as one of the very few players to have the distinction of playing in a north London derby, a Manchester derby, a Merseyside derby and a Northeast derby and played a total of 600 games scoring 145 goals! Paul has set up an organisation called, The Union of Safeguarding Officers, to offer guidance, education and legal support to those working to protect children, young adults and the vulnerable in sport, with a Mission Statement of “Every Child Safe, Every Voice Heard”, Congratulations on your award, Paul, It's thoroughly deserved! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 #PaulStewart #THFC #England #safeguarding #MCFC #Workington #blackpoolfc
