It was great to see so many foreigners enjoy themselves in the US and have positive reactions to Americans. But some of this was sad because it was clear that many had absurd preconceived notions due to mass media in their countries, especially in Europe. I don't track everything they're actually doing - but if they identify instances of fraud, then great. AND if they actually do look at all states equally that's good, though that seems dubious.

Ummm.. Actually fraud is illegal for private companies but not for government agencies on any level. For the past 250 yrs all state and federal governments have hammered private businesses and corporations into being the most watched and honest body in human existence. @covryourmouth @Gram_of_Shame @MikeBales I'd like to think so. Originally this guy Mike Bales asked a question in a civil way. I answered in a civil way. And most (some) replies have been civil. Including yours. It's still out there - we just all have to keep working at it. Right & left.

Do you think that people can return to civility when there is so much distrust, and reason for it? I see a lot of rancor, but it seems to center on the fact that one side sees the leader as the ultimate check not on power, but on the “other” side. People do not accept discourse with disagreement at all. I think that phones and algorithms have been a part of why the civility has declined …we have lost a) our ability to dialogue period and b) our respect for those who disagree with us, But there is the prediction in ancient texts that “because of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold”. Love, or at least an altruism that allows people to pause and listen, is something that doesn’t survive a disorder brought about by dispbedience to the laws. That’s one of the problems I have with lefts- by the word progressive, they appear to aim to get ahead of / stand in judgement of the way the laws are already, and even now, the perception of progressives, possibly with some truth, is that they lean toward outright disobedience of the law if they don’t think the law should be. This makes it harder to embrace dialogue as it does not foster a sense of security in the people or group of people who are opposite. And to me, that is needed for civility- first.

Improved public health - like education - improves literally everything - our workforce, lowers future costs - the benefits are endless. Anyone who works in healthcare knows this.
